Are Mouse Wheel Encoders Practical?

· I'm inquiring about the feasability of using the detector/emitter pair and encoder wheel (salvaged from a mouse)· for distance encoding in a robotic project (the AutonoMouse seen in then Homebuilt Robotic Platform thread in this forum)·. · Does the unit need to be shielded from ambient light? · I see you guys usually utilizing·light reflective discs rather than shutters.· Any inherent drawbacks to the salvaged mouse parts approach?

They usually use IR, and the sensor has a filter.

I've never used a salvaged mouse - but I've seen that many people use them for encoders.

I tried them unshielded and sunlight played havoc with mine, just from an open window in the same room.· I have no proof, but I think the shutters would be less susceptable than reflective disks·to ambient light.
