Anybody know about an IR sensor lap timer?

One of my·student teams have taken on a project of making a lap timer for a line following race track that uses BOE-Bots and 3PIs to race. (See attachment - The course is laid out on a 4 X 8 foot white board.)
They have been all over, even to NASCAR, to find ideas and samples. Apparently, the hobby community uses contact sensors, since they need to do lap times on multiple vehicles. No one we know uses IR.
Right now their biggest block is initializing the LCD.
They have done a lot of good work, and if they could get more input on working lap timers, it would speed up their project.
They are using 8051 assembler, IR xmit & rcv, and a standard 2 X 16 LCD to print the lap time.
