Can I Make an Inverted Pendulum Without a Gyro???

All the articles I see about inverted pendulums (The kind on 2 wheels that either stands in place, or can move around with remote steering) use a gyro.

For a two-wheeler that doesn't need to steer, it seems using one axis of a 2 or 2-axis accelerometer would be plenty. Until we want the bot to roam around, a gyro wouldn't serve any purpose... Right??

I believe that the problem with using an accelerometer in this application is how do you know if you're tilting, or just moving? Also, what happens when you're tilting one direction, and moving the other?
