Any idea were I can get semi transparent plastic with a black and white design printed on it?

I wish to make a light box for taking pictures of products. Material needs to be strong not flex. Semi transparent so it will defuse light shon through it.

I can provide artwork as gerber or png format. Image must be printed accurate to size.

I'm a little confused by your requirements, mctrivia. What's the purpose of the logo if the panel is just there to diffuse light?

The logo I want is for reference purposes. Though after some thought getting a laser etched stencil made and spray painting it on to some of that white plastic they use for light lens covers would work perfectly.

Did you want to be able to illuminate the panel from underneath to eliminate shadows? (I take it that's the reason for translucency.) How big does the panel have to be?

Yes i would like to be able to illuminate from underneath to eliminate shadows. The panel only needs to be 300x300mm or so.

Does the top surface finish have to be flat, or can it be glossy?

How about this: Have a copy center print your scale onto plain, white drafting vellum from a PDF file. You might have to settle for tabloid size (11 x 17), if they can't do "tabloid extra" (12x18). Then, using spray adhesive, mount the vellum to a thin sheet of glass or Plexi.

good idea. I just realized I have a glass top table I can use as an experiment. I placed the scale on a sheet of paper on top of the table and stuck a 15W florescent light underneath it. The 15W is not powerful enough to remove the shadows but it does reduce them.

I will borrow a 500W work light tomorrow and print the scale on vellum paper and see what the results are.

Will have to go searching for spray adhesive. Never even herd of it before.

edit: Walmart apparently sells it so will see if they have in stock. Home depot is next door so between the 2 I should find it.

Another way to eliminate shadows is to place your subject on a clean pane of clear glass sitting several inches above a white background. The shadows will fall on the background and will either be out of the field of view or too far out of focus to be seen in the photo.

500W sounds like an awful lot of light. If you backlight too heavily, all you will see is a silhouette of your subject.

BTW, I just got one of these: www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/cameras-photography/a205/. It's well-made and inexpensive, and the side-lighting is diffuse enough to produce shadowless images without having to backlight.

ya I have seen those and the only problem is I need to be able to shoot from directly above. Does it still work as well if you put the opening on the top and place something on the bottom?


yes 500W is a lot. was actually think of using that for the top and my flash on the bottom.
