The idea came to me to make a robot out of a ATV. For throttle i could just use a normal servo but to steer i think i need some more power. like a GIANT servo
Any idea's?

Thanks,
Miles

A large stepper with a potentiometer for positioning. Use a 10 turn pot and have the stepper make 8-10 turns to move the steering over it's range of motion. If you need more torque you could put a 1 turn pot on the steering handle.

here's one that can lift 100lb, that should be enough for steering i would think...

That is an impressive servo, but it is only 8 ft-lbs of torque, I think you would need something more rugged for an ATV.

The linear actuator, if mounted 2" from the axis of rotation, would have 100 ft-lbs of torque and would be essentially immune to shocks.

There are limits to what a pwm servo is intended to do -- stepper motors can go much, much higher in torque and are used on CNC lathes and milling machines for such purposes, so are even set up as linear actuators.

Can't remember where I first saw this, but I note several people have sucessfully converted automotive windshield wiper motors into powerful servos...

well if your not going to be too right to the point sensitive, couldnt you just buy some heavy duty motor and connect it to the HB- 25's you used in your last project? (which rocked :D )
