I was In lab today completing my Fiber final and a light bulb LED came on( bad pun) .
" Hmmm this hole on this ST barrel Bulkhead connector looks just right for a LED .
" By gorge It Does fit !!
So I tinkered for a few hours after class and came up with this
Note the DPSS Green LASER TX is a few months old . I used it for free space LASER Comm to a Solar Cell RX with a BS2 sending "hello World CQ DX CQ DX " it goes almost a mile at 600 Baud ..

The Key point is how I used a LED in a Fiber ST connector to make a super cheap Fiber TX and RX

    @Peter

    That's awesome!

...waiting for the demo using LEDs... :)

    Thanks ! everyone.!

OBC : the IR LED Demo was the first third of the video .

Attached is the circuits I used to make it work
Also attached is a photo of a LED in a Fiber ST barrel connector .

Note on the RX I put the LM386 on my own board and omitted the Shack Amp .(its the same guts )

And on the TX LASER version I use 2 1N400x diodes instead of a 220Ω resistor to drop the 5V to around 3.8V or so to run the laser pointer safely . Mind if your LASER is a regulated module that accepts 5V in you may not need all of the dropping diodes .

    Bump...

I took the same circuit as in the first version and made a Full duplex bi directional point to point "Photo Phone" .

next week I am making a Full duplex bi directional point to point ST " Fibre phone ".

I am doing a upgrade too! I am using 10mW Red Lasers for the photo phone and some super bright IR LEDs for the Fibre Phone.

I hope to get a mile in the fibre phone this time ..

I did a test with some of the new IR LEDs and the matching receivers and got up to 115 K Buad over a 1000Foot span with lots of head room.
there are losses still that I need to kink out but its looking good for a LED vs Laser test .

the Price per mile is a whole lot less with the IR LEDs .

I have on order 1 mile of duplex Fibre coming in soon to do a long span test with the voice mode.
