PE Kit :(

I just got my kit yesterday. I took my time and read the setup stuff, then a good nights sleep to start the next day on getting her built. Well today I find that I am missing 1 of the 2 big 1000mF caps.. So I have called. and Parallax will send me one, but I really wanted to start today. My question is should I wait for the "official" cap, or go buy one from Fry's or RS? Not sure if there is a tolerance situation here or not? Cap is a cap is a cap..... Dang it!! I will probably wait. As long as I have the Prop, Plug, crystal, and eeprom, anything else (if missing) can be of the shelf, or not a good idea?

    Hi.

It is not problem to buy other CAP only You muse see it have correct Voltage tolerance (BIGER OK) but not to small.

I use them without the caps most of the time, but it removes the safety measure that the caps give. It wouldn't hurt to not use it if you are only going to for a few days.

I think you can wire it to run from the 3.3v LM2937 regulator and feed it with 3 AA batteries. When you get the other cap, you can do the 5v stuff, and regulate down from a 9v battery. 5v doesn't matter in the first couple chapters of the ed kit stuff anyway.

the caps are 1000uf, and mine says 6.3v. Sence you need to replac the, you could alway consider a higher voltage rating, but keep them at 1000uF. Radio hack should have them for around a buck....

If you are anxious to get started learning, you can build the first
circuits to blink LEDs using two 1.5-volt AA batteries to give 3 volts
and just run it off the batteries. It's well within spec sheet tolerance
of 2.7 to 3.6 volts as listed on the datasheet. Otherwise match the
ratings and it's ok to shop around for the capacitors.
