Servo drive coupling

I'd like to share something I've come up with. It actually works really well.

I needed a drive for the robotic wheeled base I'm working on. I had a couple Parallax continuous rotation servos but needed a way to connect the servos to toy car wheels on a budget of $0

I used a small square piece of 1/4" ply and drilled a 1/2" hole through it (diameter of a #8 washer)

Cut another small square of 1/4" ply and drilled a 9/64" hole for the bolt to pass.

Insert the bolt through the washer, inside the 1/2" hole, through the 9/64" hole and glue the two pieces of ply together. Another #8 washer and a nut. I hot glued that assembly to a round servo arm. I cut the square pieces of ply round with the band saw about 1/8" larger than the servo arm. The 1/8" of material left me a little to reinforce the hot glue joint.

The coupling I used was piece of aquarium airline tubing. I coated the exposed end of the #8 screw and wheel axle with a layer of hot glue for grip. Small wire ties clamp the tubing to the screw and axle.

It's great. It's strong and the tubing takes care of misalignment between the servo and wheel. Hey, I made everything with a band saw and a cordless drill!

Now, what is my bot gonna' do?

The AVI shows how it goes together. The JPG shows my finished product.
