FT232RL Driver Question

I have a small board with a USB interface using an FT232RL chip.

It's always worked fine when connecting it to most any PC.

Yesterday, I tried to connect it to a client's Laptop, running the Vista Operating System.

The Laptop said it needed to install a driver before it would recognize the port.

Has anyone run into this before? Is it peculiar to Vista, or does it just happen some times? I've successfully avoided Vista for it's whole life :)

It makes things difficult if you have to tell your customers how to install a strange driver.

Thanks for the help.

Jim

You have simply been quite lucky up to now; all the machines you encountered had the driver already. Using an FTDI FT232RL with the various versions of the Winders OS specifically requires installation of the FTDI driver. Go to

    www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

    and get the proper driver.

To my knowledge the only OS with FTDI drivers pre-installed is Linux with kernel 2.6 or later.

    Brian,

Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.

The link you pointed to is the one I downloaded the driver for Vista.

I still think there's a little more to the story. I always build my own PC's, install XP, etc.

I've never installed an FT232R driver and it still works perfectly.

I have a feeling that XP comes with it pre-installed or has its own compatible driver.

Does anyone have other experience with the PC asking for a driver?

    Thanks for the help.
