help designing a circuit.
I can build simple circuits and build circuits from a schematic, but I can't design circuits. So I'm asking for help!
Scope:
I want to design a propeller controlled device that will test an ipods battery life. I would like to plugging it in through the head phone jack or the bottom connector, and start playing a song on repeat. The device would be triggered by the sound (signal) from the ipod and would record the length of time it took until the ipod stopped. Meaning the battery died or the ipod locked up. I would also like a LED as a visual indicator when each side is playing audio. (This is to test the head phone jack they break often)
I can handle everything else, I just don't know how to "trigger" the i/o based on a head phone jack audio signal, with out potential damage. I was thinking opticupliers? but no experience using them.
Any help would be appreciated.

1) read this thread for how to make an adc:

2) connect an ADC to each of the headphone pins.
3) connect an LED to a prop pin through a resister.
