Well, now that you've reached the halfway point in life, and your daily conversations transition from technical discussion to plumbing, (you'll understand that reference soon enough), let it be those who have traveled before you, and those who enjoy all the "little things," that light your path on the steep slide awaiting you on the downhill side of life. It's not all bad, of course. I did mention the little things. Like realizing you are 'that old guy' holding up traffic on the two-lane road, constantly motioning for people to pass, but secretly chuckling, as you see them cursing you in your rear-view mirror.
Won't it be grand when the local Bingo game is the highlight of your week? That'll keep your mind sharp, along with organizing and remembering your daily prescription cocktail the doctor has ordered you to ingest.
One word of advice. Shop for your nursing home early! Maybe you can work a good deal while you're still able to manage your money on your own.
As for the plumbing reference, just remember, you came in this world in diapers, you'll go out of this world in diapers.
You asked what happens when you start hitting the BIG numbers (I'll be 64 in July).
Well, it's embarrassing when the waitress asks if you would like the senior discount, but it's down right devastating when you see that you've been given the senior discount on your bill and they didn't even bother to ask! That's just one of the funny "aging" things you have to look forward to.

About 20 years ago, whilst I was still in my thirties, I had to get within a couple of feet of the Queen. Due to the special branch clearing the building prior to her arrival I had been chucked out of the room for changing out of the usual rag-tag OB engineer's clothing half way through. The result was a dark blue suit with brown shoes. HRM saw this scewed up her face and gave me such a disapproving look.
Just as the shame was easing from the mind, you remind me!
Happy birthday Ken.

Happy Birthday, Ken! I have a serious question here: Is there a peak age for programmers like there is for athletes? I've heard several times that people involved in cerebral pursuits peak out at a surprisingly young age. The knowledge base increases with age but the speed and mental acuity drops off well before that. Do you agree? Well, there is always wisdom (and the cane) to fall back on.

work and travels internationally. In fact, in the last 60 days,
he's circled at least twice around the world - to China twice,
Taiwan, the Midwest, and Europe!
Ken shares many of his projects on a personal website. kengracey.com/

That happened to me·last summer, for the first time. I was getting back on the highway after a long bike ride, and stopped into McDonald's for a cup of coffee. The kid behind the counter said "Okay, one senior coffee. Anything else?". I looked at him blankly. "No, I just said I want a cup of coffee". He repeated "Yes, sir, one senior coffee". Uh, okay. I'm 48. I'm in a t-shirt and shorts, and still wearing my bike gloves. This isn't supposed to be happening.
I took my coffee, and left. I pulled out, turned onto·the highway, and drove along thinking "I can't possibly look that old, can I?".
About two miles later I realized my right turn signal was still on from when I got onto the highway.

Just a couple of weeks ago I read a study about this. It seems that typically for a well-educated person, the improvement in the knowledge base outpaces the loss in speed of processing and loss of attention, and mental ability continues to improve until a pretty advanced age. Of course the world is full of exceptions of all sorts, but I don't think that the typical enthusiast for the kinds of things we're dealing with here has much to worry about in terms of losing mental capacity while still in his/her 30s, 40s, or 50s.
My 40s were easily my best decade so far (I'll be 49 on March 18th), even in terms of mental pursuits (and that's after earning my second Masters and a Ph.D. during my 30s). And to Ken's credit, Parallax has a fair amount to do with that.

At 20 you do it because you want to and because you can
At 30 you do it to prove that you can still show off in front of your peers
At 40 you do it and realize you probably shouldn't have done some of those things you did at 30
Also at 40 you discover the reason why the doctor tells you to turn your head when you cough, sneeze, etc.
