Propeller / Spin Tool hangs

I'm struggling with a problem that was extant with v1.2.6 of the Prop tool, but remains with v1.2.7 (R2): when I try to connect to the Prop the tool sequences through "Checking COM 1" to "Checking COM 4" and then hangs.

This is invariably with the first connection of the day, or following·a re-connection (i.e., where I have uploaded some code, disconnected the Prop to test and then reconnected it).

The USB connection is direct to a socket on my PC, i.e., not via a hub. When connecting the Prop and powering-it I always wait five or six seconds to allow the USB connection to be found, etc.,. It doesn't matter whether I press F7, F10 or F11 - the same thing happens.

Selecting 'send information to Parallax' doesn't work because it says my PC don't have an internet connection (I am not sure if the problem itself prevents the use of this facility).

Thw only way to recover is to reboot the PC and re-include the affected COM port in the ports list in the prop tool.

Any ideas? Is this just me?

(For lots of complicated reasons I don't want to go to Linux or a Mac)

I have encountered similar problems a couple of times. For me, it often helps to disconnect-reconnect the USB-plug from/to the PC. (and giving it a couple of secons for the PC to react which normally is indicated by a little "pling")
Irritating yes, but quicker than rebooting the PC.
Hope it helps a little bit...

My Vista laptop seems to be doing the same more often now. I don't believe I had this problem with XP2.

I get this the first time I try to connect, more often than not. I just retry and it gets through ok (if the prop isn't on 9 Volts, again).

I use XP sp3 on v1.2.6.

I had a problem on my Vista laptop until I changed the compatibility mode.· Right-click the Prop tool shortcut and select properties.· Click on the compatibility tab and check the "Run this program in compatibilty mode" box.· It runs fine in the XP compatibility mode.
