Electric Scooter Parts=Electric Robot Parts

The forum's exciting new flurry of homebuilt plywood-based robots prompts me to share (again) one of my favorite links to TNC scooter parts: http://tncscooters.com/partsdb.php?type=ES·. They have a wide variety of inexpensive Chinese parts (throttles, controllers, motors, clutches, chains & pinions, battery chargers, wheels, tires & bearings) that work equally well on medium to large size robots. Bookmark-worthy. Have a peek.

Also Electric Scooter Parts.com : http://www.electricscooterparts.com/motors.html

Both sites also have Ebay Stores where you can occasionally get better prices.

If you're on the fence about scratch-building·your own·robot, maybe seeing these bargain-priced parts will get you to jump in. I built a 36V electric bike with TNC's geared 250W·motor (the lowest power unit they sell) and it is quite a stump-puller. You could make a VERY powerful Battlebot using two of those.

Thanks for these links, erco. I've got some kids wanting me to help them build a "real" robot from scratch, so I'm looking at scooter motors, BS2 for a brain, and probably Xbees for remote communications. My biggest question mark lies on what sort of interface to use between the BS2 and the motors.

I sense battlebots in my crystal ball.

    erco,
Do you have a picture of the bike conversion you did in the youtube demo (posted/linked elsewhere)?
I'd like to see how you mounted the motor and all.

I'll take a shot tonite if I get a chance. I do like my solution; I made a triangular mounting plate out of 1/8" aluminum sheet, then fastened that using aluminum L-bracket to 4 screws in the dropouts for the water bottle screws. Steel bike frame, BTW. I aligned the gearmotor cog with the small chainring and used a short secondary chain to link those two. Simple and works great, but a bit unusual because it forces my pedals to rotate when the motor is on. I don't mind, I'm a spinner!

2 pics for PJ's consideration. That's the speed control mounted above the motor. Small wires go forward to twist throttle and brake levers (kill switches if either brake applied), big wires aft to 36V, 10 AH Li-Fe battery.

The motor location is slightly adjustable to take the slack out of the chain to the small chainring.

Thanks for posting those pics, erco.
Good use of that inner sprocket.
    I'm working with a "single-speed" bike (it has a hand-brake).
I'm working on struts etc to place the motor over the back tyre.
I need a bigger sprocket for the motor than the one that comes with it.
The one I found will need a mod to fit, it'll be about 1:1

OMG Peter, that looks like you chopped up my favorite Dahon Mu folding bike. Say it ain't so!

Looks to be under construction. Where do your feet rest now that the BB & cranks are long gone?

Thanks PJ. That's some kinda China clone bike. I feared it was my baby's sister chopped & channeled. I love my Dahon Mu P24 and all my other 14 bikes in the garage, next to the Corvair.

    Now I can sleep again.
