Input protection?

I have an application where I am monitoring the zero crossing point on the rising side of a 60HZ AC waveform. I want to feed this pulsed signal into the input of a Propeller chip to fire a delayed, phase-adjustable output. I have found plenty of information regarding the protection of IC outputs but not much regarding protection for inputs. Being a new hobbyist, what, if anything, do I need to do to ensure the longevity of my Propeller's inputs in this regard?

TVSs like AVX TransGuards are very useful in situations like that.

I use the H11AA1 opto for AC zero-cross detection.
