Why use a HEF4094 vs 74HC595

I have an board that uses the HEF4094 in the same way I would use the 74HC595. Why the use of what looks like a more complicated chip which requires 4 IO lines instead of 3.

Which board are you talking about? Is it a stamp?

Sorry for the lack of clarity. It is a relay board and uses the HEF to IO's. I'm just curious about the design choice.

This might have been better addressed in the Sandbox forum since it has nothing to do with BasicStamps.

For a start, look at the power supply voltage allowed for the HEF4094.
