I suspect that most such attacks are drive-by spammings. Chris, have you ever seen a case where the perp returns to the scene of the crime and posts again?
Yes I have actually...though on this software it could be a bot because registration is set up the way it is. But IP addresses never lie. I used to keep a log of them to determine which addresses to ban. I gave up on that a few years ago though. On my own forums it is the same way. I subscribe (for free though) to a spammer database. Whenever someone regsiters on my forums it checks this huge database to see if the username, e-mail or IP address has been reported as a SPAMMER or bot. If it has my forum software bumps them to admin authorization instead of letting them register via e-mail link. But then my software employs a captcha system so bots can't generally auto-login. Still, to answer your question, the logs confirm that some of the spammers try every day regardless of the fact that they've been banned. It's funny too, because they receive a message saying, "YOU ARE A SPAMMER!!! BE GONE!!!" as soon as they come to the site. But some try to register anyway and my logs show that it is a blocked address.
Chris, your constant vigilance and quick action have certainly paid off here. The Parallax Forum is mercifully free of the crud that clogs so many other venues on the net. Thanks to you and the other moderators for keeping the miscreants at bay!
