Soldering Question: What temperature?

edited 2010-01-11 18:23 in General Discussion
I have a basic soldering question.· I went to buy a soldering gun but there were different voltages and some of them had dual voltages.· I went looking on the internet and they said there is a debate about voltage verses wattage.· And there was more information saying that it is based on the type of solder you use.

What temperature should I use if there is lead in the solder and what temperature should I use if there is flux in the solder?

Can I get by with a cheap soldering gun or do I have to get one that is digital?

Don't get a gun the emi will fry computer chips. You need a pencil type.

As for temp 250 c will work great with leaded solder. Flux has no effect. And temp should be constant if using right tip.

As for cheap vs expensive digital how much do you plan to do? A high end iron like a jvc has tips that can be changed hot, emi shielding, high wattage to allow for fast recovery time and temp sensor to keep at right temp.

If this is a hobby and you have no intention to do surfacemount a cheap 20-30w will do fine.
