Just want some responses and a basic CLUE or two about midi to start with it

Just got some MIDI stuff.
Makes all kinds of musical instrument sounds!
Makes all kinds of awesome weird noise! (Like one of those big old Moog things)

I know what I'm going to do. But I don't know how to get started with the MIDI stuff.
I will RTMs but I need to know all that I don't know I need to know about MIDI.

I'll probably get the USB to MIDI cable but really hope I don't have to connect to a PC.
Would like to put midi ports on the Propeller as a musical notes editor or maybe other reasons.
And only connect synthesizer audio to PC to make music files with Audacity.
Afraid to hook up the midi cables I made. How likely is smoking the midi ports on synthesizers if cables have bad connections?

A standard MIDI connection is rather fool proof. Hooking an IN to an OUT does nothing to let out the magic smoke. It is a current loop type connection so even a short on the receiving end will do no damage to the sending unit. You will note that standard MIDI cables and connectors are 100% interchangeable for Inputs and Outputs and while this does allow someone to connect them backwards the only damage done is the devices won't play.

The receiving end has an opto-isolator and the current loop simply drives the LED in that opto.

I have a Prop scanning an entire organ console (all keyboards/pedal board and stop tabs) and it generates a MIDI out to a 2nd Prop in the organ chamber to drive 1100 or so pipes and percussion (actual instruments not synths)

Look at this thread for possible MIDI curcuits:
    http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=682346

MIDI uses a special, but simple hardware, and is in fact just a serial connection with a fixed baudrate (31.25 kHz).

If your "MIDI stuff" has also a Keyboard and a MIDI output, than you should be able to play notes on the Propeller with the MIDI Expander from this thread:
    http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=797590
There you find also a MIDI file player which should be easy changeable to play over a MIDI out to your synthesizer.
