There is an example of connecting and some sample program in the BASIC Stamp Syntax & Reference Manual under the SERIN/SEROUT command. Here is a link to the PDF in case you do not have a copy. I hope this helps.

Your PNG. will work. Take a look at ASCII, $HEX, SERIAL, 8N1, echo.
google is your friend. even tough its all in the parallax docs.
