Does anyone have a source for solid-core ribbon cable?
something about the gage of breadboard wire would be perfect, multicolor would be a bonus.

Thanks!

found this at digikey, grey jacket only though...
    http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=90101/20%20100-ND
·they have it from 20 to 100 conductors.

Of course, at $664.25 for a minimum order of 3... it's a little expensive for a hobbiest. :-]

    OBC,

You could use standard 50-mil stranded ribbon cable, terminated with an IDC DIP connector, and plugged into a wirewrap DIP socket. That would allow you to bridge the proto board's center gap and use all the conductors individually.

Another alternative is a ribbon cable terminated with female header connectors. Header pins will fit both the cable connector and the breadboard. Samtec carries cable assemblies with single-row header connectors attached. You'd be using just every other cable conductor, which would also be the case with a dual-row header connector, since the spacing between the rows can't bridge the proto board's center separator. However, with the dual-row header connector, you could also use dual-row headers plugged into one side of the proto boards to double the current capacity of the cable.

$6.64 a foot! Icarumba! Although I might pay that if I could buy 24" at a time.

@Phil: Good suggestion, but not the look I want with this project (ProtoBlade)

    Anyone else?

Well, there's always solder-tab-to-solder-tab flex cable: dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/US2010/P0074.pdf. The tabs may be a little on the short side, though.

    Oldbitcollector,

How many conductors are you looking for?

Ideal... 10.. This way I can wire an entire I/O side of a Protoboard to "in-row" connections.

It's easy enough to fabricate your own color-coded ribbon cable from solid jumper wires and transparent packaging tape:

    attachment.php?attachmentid=66506

I bent the wires at right angles and used a pair of solderless breadboards to get the spacing right and stretch them tight, then applied the tape to the top and pulled the wires out to make the final wrap. A fingernail along each interwire gap helped to seal the deal. It seems to maintain its integrity despite bending and twisting.

Only 3" long but seems cheap enough.

    Nope...

Then you'd use silvery duct tape...

    Mr. Pilgrim,

What a great alternative! Absolutely great.

    Thank you,

Not bad.. Not bad at all..

You've given me a couple ideas to expand on this idea a little..

LOL... I like to think this forum is the sort of place McGyver peruses from time to time for ideas.

@OBC, a check of the local electronics disposal store (rockby) led me to this Tyco part - FSN21A. Seems to be a solid core ribbon at 0.1" pitch...
