Shop Hint for the newer members

I saw a thread regarding a StingRay battery connector and thought I'd send this idea out to all again. I published a shop hint in Nuts'n'Volts on this a few years ago and I see the technique in some project pictures occasionally. It's really saved me allot of time and money.
I guess I'm like most robot-eers, we tend to design, build, play, learn, cannibalize, then reuse components for the next grand project. I've developed a way to 'commonize' my connectors on stuff. The male and female pins for an RS-232 9 pin D type connector make great universal connectors. With a soldering iron and some heat shrink you can reduce just about any connector to a common form. Done right, they are very grippy and connect solidly. One can also make M-M and F-F gender changers and zillions of adaptors. I've attached a picture of part of my collection and a battery connector I made for my StingRay. I never throw away anything with a connector, I just clip it off and 'universalize'. I've even got a set of alligator clip test leads terminated with these.
Cheers!

I wish there was a "must have starter kit" for beginner roboticists.
A few months ago I was given some great advice on this forum about tools and other items when I began my journey into robotics.
Maybe a forum moderator would consider creating a sticky titled "Recommended Tools & Equipment For Fledgling Roboticists," or something similar. I'm sure there would be numerous & varied opinions about what to have on hand, what's really essential, & so forth, but I think it would be a thread worthy of consideration.
Peace out,
Scope
