Hey All,

I will be introducing a group of Middle Schoolers at MLK, Jr. Middle School to the Forums this afternoon. They are attending a Scribbler Robot Camp.

If you have a chance, reply with a greeting.

The class is having a great time. Today is our competition day. They will try to make their Scribblers play Charge! Draw one or both of their initials and finish with TaDa! All while staying on a 20" X 30" piece of poster board. They have been playing with their Scribblers for about 7 hours total at this point. They get style points for other features! I know some of the entries will be amazing.

    Good afternoon young roboticists!

I'm Jessica Uelmen, and I work in the Education Department here at Parallax. I'm so happy to hear you're having fun with your Robot Camp!

Best of luck with your competition today - your challenge sounds...well...challenging, but I'm sure you're up to the task! We'd love to see a video of your competition if possible. :)

Just keep on experimenting, and using those noggins. And if you have any questions along the way, we're here on the forums and happy to help.

    Happy Developing!

Future roboticists: You're in for a real treat with Mr. Stodghill as your instructor. Robotics is naturally fun and interesting by itself, and even better with such a smart and enthusiastic teacher. You are in very good hands, so enjoy yourselves at camp, learn all you can, and make the most of your wonderful situation. CHARGE! TA DA!

    Zoot and erco,

Thank to you two also. The kids were very excited to find the messages on the forum!

We did shoot some pics and video. When I get them - I will get them on YouTube and share them here.

    erco- Happy 700th post!

    Hey All,

We are at Wossman High School this week. I have a great group of very excited new roboticists. They will be visiting here soon, in case anyone wants to say hi!

New roboticists are the very best kind! Young, creative, enthusiastic, and they don't have preconceived notions like "can't do that", or "it doesn't work like that". Good luck to you all, your teacher is well-informed, experienced, and excited to help you all. Now go forth and conquer the world!

Hi kids. Have a blast with the Scribbler robots. My kids enjoy playing with ours and trying to solve new challenges. Drawing your initials sounds easy, but its harder than you think so don't get discouraged.

    Sounds fun - any phtots?

Snow day? SNOW DAY? It's 75 degrees and sunny here in Los Angeles!

Have fun with the robots. Whatever you do, DON'T ask Mr. Stodghill how to initiate the Scribbler's "Self-Destruct" feature. That undocumented subroutine is an "Easter Egg", and it could be dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands.

    Okay folks,

After the students learn the basic functions of the Scribbler (demo, sound, LEDs, motor control, etc.), we have a contest. They are to make their Scibbler play "Charge!", draw one of their initials, and then play "tada!" They have to stay on a piece of 22" X 28" poster board.

They have to work on making the Scribbler run straight, time duration of the strokes in the letter, turning the proper angles, etc. They work on this for about 20 minutes one day and then get about 20 minutes the next day. The work is done·based on·what they have learned at that point·and trial and error for lengths and turn angles, etc.

This video is one of the student's work at Carroll High School. Her's was the most complex letter chosen. We had Ts, Ls, Ds for instance, but this is a capital K. Multi-stroke letters (where they have to back-track) are the hardest. This one was a winner!

By this time the contest is held -·the students have had less than 5 hours experience with their Scribblers and Robotics period!

    See - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CmUyUX-dgw&feature=player_embedded

Let me know what you think.

Very nice effort, great job driving straight & backtracking. I especially liked the Ta-Da at the end, with harmony!

Wow! And it was a girl, more awesome!! One of my budding passions is to get younger girls excited and interested in science and engineering, so that they know that yes you can do it, not just boys can be engineers! So that makes me really excited to see. :)

And overall that's just really impressive, it's amazing what you bring these kids through in just 5 short hours. And that just seems like a really cool activity that would get the kids really excited to do, well done!

Contratulations! What fast learners you all are!

I'm in the Education department here at Parallax. When we received the very first Scribblers in stock, our Education and Tech Support crew had to learn how to program them. As part of it, we each figured out how to draw our initials just like you all did. I had it easy with a letter S!

Great video - what a perfectly executed capital K!

I hope you all are having a great time!

Thanks for the nice comments. I can't wait to see what we can do with the Scribbler 2!

We will be a Carroll Jr. High School on Monday through Thursday of next next week! Some of the High Schoolers will probably come over to help out.

Great Video! Before I got to the video I was trying to think how I would write a K with a scribbler. Her solution was way better than mine.

    Keep up the great work

Great job with the K. Scribbler is fun, but it take a good deal of effort to get a letter to look so good.

    Hey Everyone,

We are at Carroll Jr. High School this week. Their contest is today and I will be introducing them to these forums. We had a great "L", "J", "D" and "M" yesterday. We will see what today brings.

I have to admit, the Jr. High students seem to catch on more quickly than the High Schoolers. What does that say about me? YIKES!

If you have a chance - send them a "hello."
