Prop Ubuntu Compatability?

I currently have Dell on the ropes and have heavy savings lined up on a Mini 10v, though the window of opportunity is small.

I found a 39 page thread relating to Ubuntu, and I searched around more but I am having trouble finding direct answers, mostly just people talking specifics about acronyms I don't understand.

My question is, what issues will I have if I get a Ubuntu machine rather than Windows?

Is there a Propeller Tool device that is as user friendly for a Ubuntu machine?

What concerns should a guy who's used Windows his whole life, with limited programming and electronics experience, have with buying a Ubuntu computer?

My main concern is with Propeller compatibility, since I will call my computer saavy friend shortly. But I know there are some very intelligent people here so I figured I'd get your input as well.

Thanks for the help!

Keith

P.S. With the holiday savings and Dell facing attention to it's low sales, I suggest you look in to a Dell computer and price negotiate as I have (and still am).

I suppose I'll throw one more question at you, since negotiation is still ongoing. What is the "highest you'd pay" for:
Intel Atom N270 1.6Ghz/533Mhz 512K
160GB 5400RPM
1GB DDR2 SDRAM
56Whr 6-cell
Wireless g/n
Bluetooth 2.1
1024X600
Intel GMA 950
Currently 1yr Warrenty though I'll probably get upgrade free (Easiest last minute thing they'll throw at ya if ya act like ya won't buy)

Since this is their hardest category, mini notebooks, you can say you're looking at Acer Aspire One etc and they'll try very hard to get the sale. They'll want a holiday sales boost to ease their investors minds.

You are not going to be able to use the Prop Tool on Ubuntu or anything other than Windows. Some have tried to run it under Wine on Linux with no success yet I gather.

Instead just use BST http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=755835. It is a complete Propeller tool like IDE for the Propeller including a down loader.
BST works very well, just as easy as the Prop Tool, and has a few extra features you may appreciate one day.

Can't really answer re how you will get on with Ubuntu or Linux. That depends a lot on you, your experience, expectations, etc.
My Windows days ended in 1998 so I don't really know what those guys get up to nowadays.

Thanks Heater, I saw that post but accidently overlooked the link.

That answers the direct Propeller compatibility, which was my main concer.

I'm sure you will be very happy with BST. BradC has done a fabulous job creating it and then ensuring it works across all platforms.
