Sorry if this has already been asked and answered (I couldn't find anything using several different keywords) already.. I just installed 1.2.6 on an XP SP3 machine, but when I try to run, it present the splash screen for a split second, then loads up the GUI, which says "Not Responding" in the program bar when I try clicking on it. I tried with the prop plug connected and disconnected from the PC, I rebooted the system, and even uninstalled and reinstalled the program! My IE version is above 7.0. Help!

    Hi,
I get the same behavior for 20-30 seconds when launching the tool. However after this, the tool works fine. This happens for all OS's (XP, vista 32, Windows 7 64)

Patience *IS* key after all! It's taking close to a minute for me, but at least I know it works! Thanks Michael!

It loads in a few seconds on my PC (WinXP), with no "not responding" message.

Mine freezes sometimes when I have a drive letter mapped to our network. I'm not sure why, but I have to disconnect all the mapped drives, then it works okay.

It looks like it is trying to read the mapped drive when it starts up, because the last drive in the list is highlighted.

    Bean.

    Does that byte of memory hold "A", 65, $41 or %01000001 ?
    Yes it does...

Windows also has an issue when a new folder is accessed that it has to locate and render thumbnail previews for any graphics files it finds. There's a way to turn this off in the registry, which I've done several times. It works for awhile and snaps up folder access, but the problem always seems to come back for some reason. I'm not currently experiencing delays with the Prop Tool, although I have in the past; but UltraEdit and file downloads under Opera are are dog slow getting started.

Ahh, yes! Bean is onto something! I have several drives mapped, and now that I think about it, explorer sometimes takes a while to respond when all the drives are being displayed. I clicked on the "show recent folders only" button, and it launches immediately.

This can also happen with removable media.

Actually, under these circumstances bst will probably behave in exactly the same manner if you have the removable or mapped drive in your list of directories.

Having said that, by default the Propeller Tool appears to scan every directory on every device attached / mapped to / on the system, which would cause this behaviour.

Some additional info on the "not responding" behavior - this only occurs if you try to click on the app while the hourglass is spinning.
Note that this is not specific to the prop tool - I get this on several other IDE's including eclipse (eclipse.org) - the timeout depends on your proc/hd combination and occurs when the drive is accessed - for example on my Corei7 it occurs the least. This message and the white UI has been an issue since XP - but is minimized in Windows 7.
BradC's detail on drive scanning sounds correct.
Otherwise the prop tool is excellent.

Just to expand on this behaviour a little ,when you perform a click Windows places a message in the applications message queue. If the app has not pulled the message from the queue in a certain interval, Windows will let you know the application has not responded to the event yet. So if you don't click or move around it should just sit there in the background grinding away until it's done.

Indeed, if I do not click, I do not get the "not responding" message.

Bean, the "show recent folder only" button is directly to the left of the drop down menu above the directory tree. It helped in my case as the recent folder was the Propeller Tool 11.2.6 directory.

I went ahead and disconnected from all my mapped drives as I didn't really need them. No issues whatsoever now, and proved to just be a windows explorer issue anyways. Thank you all for your input.

    Cheers,

Perhaps add a ": Solved (Windows problem)" to the title.
