powering higher voltage devices

Hello I am new to developing with a BS2 on a BOE protoboard.
I would like to know how to control a device that requires a higher voltage or amperage, like 12 V, with the BS2.

Thanks Mike that helps a lot and I had no idea about all of those columns, so now i can start reading up.
