Recently there has been a flood of a new talking pens
that can sense tiny dots in a page of a book

Anybody knows how it works?
Is it a tiny camera at the tip of the pen?

It doesnt look like a scanner, it says touch and read, suggesting pre built phrases are triggered by special areas of the book maybe rfid or something?

No it's not rfid.
It's tiny dots printed on the book.
You can see the dots by using a magnifying glass.
Some dots are larger and some dots are smaller.
The distance between dots also varies.

The dots are off center of a grid. By measuring which direction off the grid you get 4 symbols. By scanning 9 dots you get 4^9 possible areas

I do not know the exact part they are using. Sparkfun has a lot of tiny cmos senssors available that could be used.

The original pen I was looking at is this one:

from the pictures you can see there is a small camera just offset from the pen point.

I'm not sure, i just remembered the thread, and came across the deal, and thought i would post it. all i can think of is for parts, but it looks like the price went up 10 dollars so it is a little less appealing.
