Hey all,

The packaging company had to order some lead frames for the Propeller DIP chip and the supplier is delivering them to the packaging company on November 23. This was a bit of a surprise since there was no delay last time.

Then, we have a week of testing before they arrive at Parallax. I'm pretty sure we'll have Propeller DIP chips at Parallax no later than December 4, 2009.

I'm sorry that we don't have these today. You and I would both be much happier. I'm concerned that we may even run out of Propeller DIPs for the various educational kits we build (we set some aside for kits when the shortage really showed up).

Sincerely,

Ken Gracey

Although I'm sure many people are frustrated about the situation, I am really relieved.

With Parallax on this course, I do not have any reservations about my favorite micro going away.....at least in the foreseeable future.

I hope everyone understands this is an evolution of the process.....and can give some slack to Parallax. I'm sure they are doing their best, considering their size, and the current economy.

Mistakes are the easiest way to learn.. In fact one of my favourite quotes is "Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.". Gotta fall off and skin those knees.

I'll bet my left arm that there are a few updated procedures, belts and braces in place to make sure it does not happen again :)

Well....I don't know if I would go there, for the market is hard to predict, but it is a nice thought.

At least we were all fore-warned in advance and there was always the QFP & QFN. Most manufacturers I know would hide the fact and keep promising knowing full-well they could not deliver.

You're all too nice to us. We messed up by not having the right parameters in our system for lead time, safety stock, and projections. Perhaps the problem was compounded by high sales rates, but come on - this is a core product of Parallax and one on which we have much investment of time, interest and money. You'd think we could complete the picture by having good administration to match our engineering. Our core team responsible for purchasing, projections and oversight (me) is ashamed of our performance in this regard. We tuned up our ERP system to be smarter about our Propeller supply.

And as BradC noted, we shall learn from our mistakes. But give it a bit of time and we can forget our lessons.

Funny story that reminds me of this fact. We sell lots (thousands) of Boe-Bots every month - this is a core product at Parallax. We regularly order 10-20K units of servos from Futaba. Servos have a long lead time and very steady usage because of the Boe-Bot. Just like this Propeller DIP chip situation, we once ran out of servos four years ago. It stuck so well in everybody's head that future hires of purchasing staff were often told one thing "whatever you do here at Parallax, don't run out of servos!". We have never run out of servos again. Just recently I heard Jim Carey tell our buyer "thanks for having servos - it's really great to have them in stock all the time!".

Meanwhile ... some of the nice folks on the forum with extras might be able to give some back in a pinch.

In the meantime, to anyone who wants DIP40's, I'll be willing to sell a few to anyone wanting to get started that can't purchase one elseware. I only have less then 5 to spare, though.
