Amateur Radio used to be the breeding ground for many of yesterdays advances.
Geez, a group of volunteer/hobbiests were able to get NASA to put a satellite in to orbit for them!
I think the internet has made people lazy! When was the last time you went to the library? Been about 10years for me....got the internet and just google!
Having a conversation with someone, on the radio, is trickier than just texting. And how many actually text to people they don't know in other countries!? At least on purpose!
Our club has a lot of members and has some great presentations (from outside people: forecasters, mfgrs....etc..) but there are only a few that get armpit deep in to things. A few guys have the ability to afford some of these large base stations and they usually buy them as kits to put together. Saves a few bucks and allows them to appreciate it more.
When I rejoined the local club....I tried to explain to my wife what I'd be doing. After 15minutes of jibber-jabber, she looked at me and said, "Oh, so it's a geek club...."
Well....geek is better than nerd I guess....so the first Tuesday of every month is now marked on the Calendar as "Geek Meeting"...
At least she lets me out of the house.... ;)

What's the best thing to do in a lightning storm? "take a one iron out the bag and hold it straight up above your head, even God cant hit a one iron!"

I'm certain that if the club in my county had a "Catering Officer", as yours does, it would attract membership across a much broader age spectrum!
