@ computer guy: send me your shipping address. Red or blue?
@ Javalin: agreed on the content of EL wire. These little CCFL tubes are not EL wire-based, as we finally found out when we started to put them to use.
I got my tubes today. They are nice! I want some more so Ken, PM or Email me with pricing and ordering information. I want some more tubes and convertors, for one of my convertors were broken on arrival. I hacked it open and it looked a lot sloppier then the one above, so it is most likely poor soldering that caused the failure. I like the tubes and they glow brightly, ideal for lighting. I have some projects in store, so PM me, Ken!
P.S. Do not attempt even slightly bending these. I broke my blue tube and I am very upset as I had plans for it.
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ Computers are microcontrolled.
So.... What we need now is a cheap Propeller controllable PCB with:
1) Onboard voltage inverter with multiple voltage input options - 3.3v-3.6v (Prop and also 4xAA) , 5v (to inc USB) and 12v (car) might be good.
2) 10x EL wire or whatever outputs
3) Stackable/chainable module would be good too.· Perhaps RS485?
4) Some form of wireless control maybe?
5) If possible a module that supports CCFL tubes and the EL wire output. I'd prefer to use the EL wire for flexibility.
6)·Serial input for other uP's?· I.e. Stamp?
I've been looking around and there is plenty of people offering EL wire and an inverter, but very few (Sparkfun!) that offer a PCB type programmable sequencer, but you still require a seperate voltage inverter and to learn ATmega programming!· The seperate inverter makes it a chunky project.
I think it would sell nicely pre-Christmas!
Parallax? Anybody? I'd make one but my electronics knowledge isn't upto the task!
I said that I would pay for them, Ken. Save some free ones for customers that do not have them yet. At $2 a tube and $4 a convertor they are totally affordable.

Just some green and blue tubes and convertors, and a little of each color EL wire with a convertor. It doesn't matter how much of each, I will find something to do with any kind of amout. Thank you greatly, Ken!

Bamse, yes, send me your shipping address and full name by PM.
And this will bring a close my free distribution of CCFL tubes and power supplies. All I've got left is enough for our office robots and the kid's science fair projects.
But those who have no CCFL tubes should worry not, I've got 1200 units on the way to Parallax right now!
In about how long until this becomes a Parallax Product?
When they are sold by Parallax I will order a large quantity of them most likely. They are very bright and can be used in a lot of projects.

I hooked up my red and blue EL Wire today and it looks great. I took some photos of the blue wire with my laptops webcam.
The wire is wrapped around a CD spindal to make it neat.
It looks better in the dark but I wasn't sure how my webcam would go with a night shot.
Might try it later.

The CCFL tubes are in stock, but we're not ready to sell them. We need to take photos, get pricing together, etc. Expect to see them around Thanksgiving - just in time for the holidays!
We've also got some of these tubes and power inverters sent to TUV Rheinland labs in Hong Kong so we can properly characterize them for our customers. We will fully disclose the chemical constituents, handling and disposal practices for this hardware. Considering they come from China we are unable to obtain complete datasheets so we will produce our own.
Quick Question re the black box inverter for the EL Wire...
Is the socketed end for the 12V input (with additional plug and red & black wires) and the tails for the EL wire??

as far as the chemical makeup of the gases it depends on the color you should be able to find the color contents somewhere on the internet. little neon bulbs are called neon because thats what gas is normally in the and they normally glow orange but if you change the gas they will glow in a different color. i used to know what gas was what color but i have forgoten

Parallax posesses power beyond belief.
DO NOT TAKE THESE CCFL TUBES APART IF YOU INTEND TO USE THEM.
They are no longer hot glued together, they are super glued.
If you manage to get them apart without breaking the internal ccfl, by cutting the outer plastic, or melting the ends, you will find that pressure on the ccfl tube ends, OR any long term heat from soldering the ends WILL rupture the gas seal on the ends, destroying the tubes ability to light up to original brightness.
These are NOT meant to be taken out of the plastic housing.
My only complaint is that the wires coming out of one of the ends get in the way of the hole that your supposed to mount the tubes with. Makes mounting it very very difficult without doing damage to the tubes.
Comments
I would be interested in some el wire (25 feet) and a trasnformer.

Black (tails) are for 12v input.

We are on a marina so there is plenty of light around, not at all like at an anchorage.
They are quite bright and draw about 370mA per tube at 13V.
Still to get the EL wire stripped.
