Help with IGBT specs

Hello All

·I am having trouble understanding the specs for the Fuji 2MBI 200N-120 IGBT. I have attached the spec sheet below.

My first ? is: what is the full on voltage. The spec states 20v max but later I see 4.5v min· 7.5v max for the gate voltage. I'm confused.
My second ? is: What is E1 and E2 for?

I couldn't find a typical application schematic for use·as a motor driver. If You have one it would help me a lot.
·I'm very new to IGBTs.This is My first·rodeo with them.

I salvaged·the IGBTs from some old V.F.D.s at work. I looked up the price·$400 ea.

I have 2 600watt/24volt DC motors that I want to control. I feel this would be a breeze for these IGBTs. If I use two per motor I should be
·able to make an H bridge.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You've got 3 different voltages. The first (20V) is an absolute maximum rating. Anything over that can damage the device. The other two are minimum thresholds. The device doesn't begin conducting until that threshold is exceeded. They give a minimum (4.5V) and maximum (7.5V) for this threshold. These figures don't say anything about how much current the IGBT will conduct at this threshold. You'd have to refer to the graphs for that sort of information. It doesn't really tell you the "full-on" voltage.

There are two IGBTs in this device connected in series. E1 is the "emitter" of one and E2 is the "emitter" of the other. You'll need a "high-side driver" for G1 / E1 since these are above ground. Remember that the threshold voltage for G1 is relative to E1 and E1 could be many volts above ground. The high-side drivers reference the switching voltage to the high-side voltage (C1) rather than ground.

    Mr.Green

    Thanks for the reply

I added the rest of the spec sheet data to my first post

    I'm still a little confused with E1 and E2

If no voltage has been applied to G1 ,(IGBT off) How would I get a reference voltage from E1 ?

I'm looking at these IGBTs as MOSFETS as far as turning them on and off and I think this is were the confusion comes in.

The additional copies of the spec sheet don't help much. I looked more at the graphs and it looks like the gate voltage (between the gate and emitter) should be on the order of 12-15V. If you're running off a 24V supply, it'll be roughly 12V.

    Here's an article on a discrete high-side driver: www.innovatia.com/Design_Center/High-Side%20Drivers.htm
The author references several ICs that combine a high-side and low-side driver. Have a look at them too.

    Mr Green

Thats what I was hoping. I have 13.2-13.8V. This helps a lot.

I'll check out the link. I need a lot more study on IGBTs and Hi - Lo side drivers.

    Mr.Green

    Thanks again for the link.

I see its pretty easy to turn on an IGBT, But it must be turned off as well before another is turned on. (HI-LO drivers)

    It all makes since know.

    You are the MAN !
