I am planning on starting a car project. First things first the power. For simplicity sake I was thinking of using a 5v regulator like this http://www.dimensionengineering.com/datasheets/DE-SW0XX.pdf I have searched through the forum and did not find a clear cut schematic for providing 5v from an automotive 12v power system. If any one has a suggestion for other viable 5v regulators I'm all ears.

Ultimately I will be using a matrix orbital display for displaying the amount of turbo boost. At some point I would like it to grow to display compass direction, altitude, automatic brightntess adjustments to the display.

I'm looking forward to moving forward to seeing what this grows into.

    The 5V regulator you mention should work. Be sure to put a 1A diode in series with the input to protect against accidentally connecting the car battery backwards. It does happen. Also add some output capacitance like the datasheet shows.
