search.parallax.com weirdness (now appears completely broken)

One thing I've learned from using search.parallax.com lately is this: if you don't get any results, try the exact same search over again. It's as if you have to tell it, "Okay, I really mean it this time!" This seems to be recently acquired behavior. 'Anyone know why it's doing this?

Thanks,
-Phil

The miniGoogle search engine should be returning consistant, if abbreviated, results. I am seeing an increasing number of crawling failures with the appliance. It hasn't been booted for over a year, so let me try that and see if we get different results - but consistant responses.

Now I get no results on the search site at all. And if I retry the search, I get a "Server Error" message.

Looking for the Google Search Appliance? You're getting warmer...

Misplaced servers.. I hate it when that happens.. :)

I've been getting warmer for a week, by now I should be on fire, but someone keeps pouring water on it.

    Jim, did you reboot?

I haven't rebooted in years. The server at search.parallax.com hasn't been rebooted in 18 months. Windows server get rebooted far more often.

In a pinch the "Cached" button on the search results "seems" to work.

This is a disappointing look at Google hardware, I would expect better from something they created.

Yes, rebooting the appliance actually requires a visit to the front panel of the machine. It cannot be done remotely. I will add that to my list when I rotate backup tapes later this week. Thanks for the reminder.

Tapes? That scares me more than a server failure...

LOL... Yeah, we still use backup tapes, just in case plan A and B both hit a wall. They are the foundation of our worst-case MTTR (Mean Time to Repair) scenario.

What's wrong with tapes? DAT is still in common use...

Generally, purchase of a reliable drive and regular replacement of tapes (if on rotation backup) works fine.

Until my drive recently failed I used ZIP disks (ioMega) for my most important backups. It's only now that the cost of the ZIP750 drive is prohibitive when I can buy a 1TB external USB HD for the same price.
