I need a narrow 8x8 text font.

I'm looking for a 8x8 bitmapped text font that has narrow characters. The CGA font is just too thick.

I found the for the ZX81 in the hydra thread, but it doesn't have lower-case characters.

Does anyone know of one ? I'd like to have the data in·hex value, but I'll take what I can get.

I'm a little confused by your request, Bean. Given an 8x8 pixel array size, isn't the actual character width just a function of the horizontal pixel clock rate?

Have you looked at the font in the NTSC text driver thread? Not sure if it's thin enough, but it's another font. Also OBC posted up some C64 font conversions. Some of those are thinner.

The old Apple 8x8 was kind of nice. It's really 7x8, and is thin because of that. (video system only had 7 pixels / byte)

Phil, I think he's talking about the number of pixels used to detail the characters. For readability on some displays, it's good to either double up, or go single pixel.

(At least that's how I took it, and linked accordingly above. We shall see...)

This is probably too small for what you want, but it's a simple 5x6 font, variable width, designed to be held in the Cog's RAM:

I've attached an 8x8 font I use for my coldfire platform. If you need even narrower characters I also have an 6x8 font somewhere on my old amiga but I have to search a bit.

After rereading Bean's post and the posts following mine, I think what he really wants isn't "narrow" characters, but "thin" (as potatohead described them) or "light" (as typographers describe them) characters, i.e. those with thin strokes. In this case, the strokes would be single-pixel wide.

Yeah, "narrow" is just the pixel clock these days. The older 5x7 fonts and such were to get higher character densities, with slower pixel clocks, and more moderate storage requirements.
