How to encode for distance information

Friends:

Lets say I have a disk, like on a wheel, what sensor and how would I go about encoding so as to derive distance information? I want to make marks along the side of the tread on a tracked vehicle and use the "pulse" information to derive distance information. Maybe the TSL1401-DB sensor?

Thanks amigos,

Migs

If you move 1 inch between marks then 12 'pulses' will be a foot. You need to test your setup to see how far it moves for each pulse and then count them to find how far you've gone.

From the picture the motor has a shaft out the back, why not put an encoder there and then measure how far for a turn of the motor?

You might try the following motor encoder from the same folks that make the tracked platform that you pictured. http://www.lynxmotion.com/Product.aspx?productID=448&CategoryID=
