Invitation to Savage Circuits

Some of you have noticed my sig line code and have visited my project website.· What you may not realize is that when I rebuilt the website (still fixing a few bugs) I had bigger plans for it.· The main website is just getting the final touches of having most of my projects replaced, however this time I have a blog for posting progress on incomplete projects (normally you don't hear about them until their done).· I also have a discussion forums, video and photo galleries and even a detailed history of how I got to where I am today.· Most of my past projects are posted or are being restored.· I am placing all new projects up and providing more details than I have in the past.· As an added bonus the forums also has a user project section.

The Savage Circuits Forums will be for more general conversation about electronics, programming, robotics·and projects and will most likely be of interest to the more dedicated hobbyists.· Many who posted in the Old-School Hackers thread will be interested in this site and what it has to offer.· The hackers, the hobbyists, the inventors, oh my!· So I invite you to stop over and check it out.· As I said, casual discussion and atmosphere.· There's a board for everything.

Another quick announcement (which you'll find out from visiting the site anyway) is that before December I should have a tech podcast coming out.· This show will cover electronics and microcontroller technology, robotics, etc.· It will cover a project in-depth each month and hopefully I will have some guest appearances on there from interesting people in this field.· So as not to dilute the Parallax forums any comments or questions should be posted on the Savage Circuits Forums or as a comment on my blog.· You don't even have to register to post comments on the blog.· There are a few projects missing from the main project site right now so I am going to get back to fixing that.· In the mean time here are the links...maybe I'll see you there.

Main Project Website - http://www.savagecircuits.com/
Savage Circuits Blog - http://blog.savagecircuits.com/
Savage Circuits Forums - http://forums.savagecircuits.com/

You can get to the rest of the site from the menu on the main site page.· Take care!

I especially liked the 'obsolete projects'. We have come a long way - many of us have never heard of a Z80 or thought about all analog applications.

The main theme seems to creativity, not just replicate another black box that someone else did.

Well right now I am looking for feedback on the site (there are messages there regarding things) and the upcoming podcast tech show. This will help define the way things are done in the future. Once the show launches you can count on me posting projects more often. Probably one large project per month and one smaller project as well, so two total. Something every two weeks. First I need to get everything figure out and for that I'll need the help of fellow hackers and hobbyists. Take care.

    Chris,

I like the site....but there are a few things that do not work in my browser (yea....I do not use IE......I'm a Firefox user).

For the most part.......I think you have a good starting point. I'm sure the site will evolve over time. Most I have watched with time change in about three years.

    HI Chris,

I'd second James - please consider getting Firefox to review your site. It is not overboard to say that if it works in F.Fox, it will work in any browser.

Additionally, there is *super* programming, debugging, and message-trapping plugin for F.Fox that will help you troubleshoot your site. Many pro web folks use this daily:

    Chris:

Looks to be an interesting site and a great resource. I will check it out more between AM diaper changes with our new twins.

Savage Circuits even sounds great. It's fun to say out loud. It must be great to riff of off of a great last name like SAVAGE. Whether you sold SAVAGE sausages or SAVAGE screwdrivers, you'd have a long line of people waiting to buy.

My last name will surely be a limiter to snappy product & website names. Ostendorff Ostrich burgers, anyone? No panache, dang it.

Chris: these are really great web pages. I especially enjoy seeing web sites with electronic and computer projects. I can see you put an enormous amount of well spent time into this, and, as you can see, we greatly appreciate the results.

I’m trying to find an easy way to accommodate James and Howard’s suggestions without having the web update side of things take a significant amount of time that could be used for projects. It’s kind of funny how I never think about web browsers like Firefox or even phone-based access (like from a Blackberry). I am used to seeing the internet through IE so I guess I take for granted that there are other options out there.

On one hand I’d like to think that compatibility issues wouldn’t interfere with everyone and anyone participating on the site and benefitting from it. On the other hand the thought of rebuilding the entire site to make that happen would only hurt the overall goal of getting new material up as soon as possible and at a faster rate than what has been happening the past two years.

Perhaps there is some compromise. I will have to install alternate browsers on my tertiary machine and see how things look. It may be something simple that I can fix with little research. Since I don’t use the other browsers it is somewhat difficult to understand why they wouldn’t be compatible since you would think they would offer the same level of HTML support. In any event I will look into it soon. Sadly there are still several projects not posted and I need to get them off my old computer, so by this weekend is the goal.

    Chris,

The basic HTML is going to be pretty universal to all browsers. It is the other languages that are going to be a problem. For example......the javascript menu on the left top side of the page. The major of the information on your site is readily available to all browsers.

    Chris,

Also...if you want to concentrate on the material...I can offer to do some HTML coding if you wish. I have a little experience in the area...and would be willing to lend a hand.

I don't think it should be as involved as my site, although it is very easy to update and add content (but a bear to setup). But we could do some neat things.

the bigest problem is not the other browsers it is IE. Microsft does not recognize world wide HTML and javascript standards and has writen there own. some times it works some times it doesn't.

If you have PHP access I can give you my source codes for a template based site generator I have made. Or i can just provide you with the PHP code to help you detect if a cell phone or what browser.

Your web site actually works pretty well on my blackberry. your forum does not work at all though.

I do recall back in the early 2000's having some web code to detect netscape vs IE, but never really worried about it. I stopped at a member posted link recently and was shocked that the site identified me as using IE7+ (i knew it could detect browser version, just never expected what came next) and then proceeded to berate it and attempt to autostart a download of Firefox. That blew me away...

Lab Rat: I can make it that way, but you'd have to create an account and sign in to do it. That is a turn off to some just to be able to comment on photos.

Erco: Funny stuff...yeah, one of my sisters got married and kept her name because, "It's too cool to lose." Hopefully the catchy name will help the show and site take off. We're getting a few familiar names on there, but to grow we'll need some input and some fresh content.

Welcome to the *real* world of IE ;-P.

You can try this for less errors (but be sure to unclick it when testing your own site)

tools -> internet options -> advanced (tab) -> Browsing (Section)·-> Show friendly HTTP error messages

Matt (mctriva) is correct about IE being the problem, not the other browsers. (I am browser neutral because I have to use 5 different ones everyday.)
JamesL's suggestion of keeping it simple is always the best. The real issue is that IE will allow things it shouldn't - and dork up (occasionally) on *standard* things that work on other browsers. (You can make IE 6, 7, and 8 hang on a video playback in one tab while opening a PDF in another - because IE doens't handle certain errors correctly. ... I could rant about how many times IE hangs or gobbles up mem ... on very clean installs ... but ... :)

Firefox is the most adherent to the W3 specs, as I mentioned. And did I mention the ADDON's (hint hint) ? :)

IMO - Steer wide clear of IE 8 !

Here at work we have a firewall which actually interferes with a lot of things on various websites. For example, I cannot view certain embedded video clips on certain sites nor can I download certain files. Not sure of the details on this one.

At home the page appeared to not be there. Maybe the site was down briefly at the time or there was some problem on my end. I can try it from home later.

When I login to my own forums from work here I end up with a blank page inetad of the main front page. If I delete the extra characters from the URL and go back to the base URL I can see that I am logged in and continue. I don't have this problem at home. It also affects a few other things on my site.

Yes, it will be nice·to see·comments on work in progress. Like the forums here, it's really helpful to others when you encounter a problem and can describe not only the fix, but also the thought process and·the research and resources, that got you to a solution.

Chris, I've found the projects you've posted here always to be of the highest calibre, not necessarily in terms of complexity or technical advance, but rather in their clarity of description and detail.

    Looking forward to your work!

Yeah, those were the days...the original ones started in 1997 with games like Duke Nukem 3D and over the next few years added Quake 1, Quake 2, etc...There were only 4 of us for those years.· In 2000 was when we started going to 8 and 12 players and needed more space.· We had our own website with a complete transcript of everything we did, who was there, who won what game, scores, screenshots, etc.· Sadly, only the live pics were saved from the website.

I did manage to recover the work folder where I created the ZIP files with the save games...certain games like Warcraft III and Quake 2 would allow you to 'record' the gameplay.· Since I had the fastest machine it always fell to me.· These were compiled and saved on the website as well and I do still have several of those files.· Fun times...sadly I don't really have time to play games anymore, but in retrospect, when I did I wasted so much time.· I remember the 2 years I played World of Warcraft...I don't think I ever got a single project done during that time.
