What are people doing for the prop design contest? A friendly dicussion.

I'm just wondering what people are planning to do for the prop design contest. Seems like there should be some really cool ideas this year.

For me, I don't have time to enter the competition with a physical project. However, I have almost finished my human interace and human display drivers. They pretty much smash the·the current·human interface·keyboard video and mouse·drivers in·features and ease of use but I would need to write some GUI or something to show off all the mouse/keyboard listeneres and other features I have in this.

I wonder if just a software entry could win. Hah!

Anyway, so what are other people up to?

I am working on an independent portable propeller programming platform. It has 2 Props, one that simulates itself (so you can have built in objects) and one that compiles the code. I have gotten the editor and text jobs done and have just started on the compiling part. I am about to start a thread asking for help from other language makers for the propeller to ask them some human interface questions. They should really have a "best object" competition as well.

I am microcontrolled.

But you·can·call me micro.

Want to·experiment with the SX or just put together a cool project?

I hesitate to say what I am working on, in case it doesn't work...

I won't be doing anything this year; no time. But I just realized a few days ago that I have a really cool possibility. I have about 30 white LED clusters (each is 7 LED's on a tiny circuit board about 1/2 inch in diameter) which were the guts of industrial annunciators, basically LED status light bulbs. I have them because they spent 3 weeks under water after Hurricane Katrina and we were asked to replace them all. I salvaged the guts when I realized most of them still work. I am thinking a Propeller might put them to good use in some way.

Seems like an interesting idea.

I submitted my Black Box to the contest. I still have more work to do on it, (like change the interface and add more features, plus more/optimized/commented programming.

I had another project in mind, but the economy knocked me back to -1.
So I can't invest much more into new parts/boards.

Since I'm pretty sure some of our brilliant engineers will outshine almost anything I come up with... :)
To understand my project, I invite you into the thought and situation which inspired it.

I have a new friend (He's Jeff as well) that I met a few weeks ago that has a similar background as myself.
He was raised by extremely strict, old fashion parents who never let him watch TV, growing up.
(I had the same rules, but tended to be "passive aggressive" as a teen and broke them often.)

As a result, he is just now discovering the media (movies & TV) of the 80's, in particular MTV videos.
It's hilarious to see him really getting into the old videos from the 80's on Youtube, etc.
(He missed them the first time around.)

Now those of you who are also "X-genners" will understand that MTV isn't what it used to be.
In fact, as far as I'm concerned I think they tossed a wonderful thing to air other garbage.
(Your mileage may vary)

So...

My product is a Propeller with an SD card, an IR setup, connected to the PC (with large screen!)
It will take control of the browser via serial port.

One mode of operation will be to randomly play 80's MTV videos one after another.
Another mode of operation will do the above sprinkled with 80's commercials.
Another mode of operation will be to check weather, news, or movies with the remote.

Now, I *know* that you can connect a remote to a PC, and I know that you could
do "playlists", etc on the PC itself.. But hey! Where's the Propeller fun in that!?? :)

Hopefully, the concept will sprout a few other interesting ideas along the way.
(Most of my projects seem to take on a life of their own.. I like it that way.)

OBC

"to check weather, news, or movies with the remote"

Is that also 80's weather, news, or movies:)

I must be really ancient. In my mind MTV is a newfangled thing and has always been Smile:)

Ahhhh, the '80s. I ignored them well.
Wasn't there some half-crazy, glitchy, poorly animated thing called Max Headroom?

"Wasn't there some half-crazy, glitchy, poorly animated thing called Max Headroom?"

That was about the future, which Then was what Now IS.
Digital TV makes everything look crazy and glitchy like Max Headroom.

I'm working like crazy on too many projects and just burned out,
so if anything amazing works before deadline I'll enter it, otherwise not.
I need a peace and quiet vacation, and most of my projects make a lot of noise.
