i am building a full scale independent robot it is going to take approximately 5 grand to build estimated it will probably wiegh in at 750 to 1000 poiunds and i want to me able to control this machine via ethernet i would like to get all the systems to talk to the main system via ethernet and i am not sure how to do that 5 grand is only an estimate if my total price is higher oh well does anyone have any ideas how to do this· the main computer on board will comunicate with a master computer such as a laptop wirelesly i will have to incorperate a wireless router. my power source for this machine if i can pull it off will be a chainsaw motor converted to propane (for indoor use) to operate the generator i am still not sure how it will all work out if i am able to use parallax products i will because i trust parallax in the most extreme conditions plus they are very easy to work with as we all know

Most "embedded" PCs (I assume that's what you're talking about for an on-board controller) would have a built-in Ethernet interface. Since you'll have power available, you could use a wireless Ethernet adapter. SMC makes one that I've used this way (SMC2671W), but I'm sure there are others. There are also a variety of USB 2.0-based WiFi adapters that you could use.

Apparently Parallax will be coming out with some sort of WiFi adapter that can be used with a Propeller (and maybe a Stamp too). There are no details available, but it may be available by the time you're ready to need one and it might be usable with an embedded PC's serial port.

the stamp based devices would be ideal i am looking to send control data via ethernet to the individual microcontrollers however i think this project would have to be prop for the reduced price

how are you going to get·oil into the engine when running it off of propane? or is it one of the ones that has separate tanks·for oil and fuel?

    Lab Rat,

If you’re interested in internet controlled robotics using the Propeller chip you should check out Steve Norris’ work at http://www.norrislabs.com/ He’s done this using our products and had great success. Take care.

for oil i will probably have an oil drip or an oil misti will have to figure it out but thanks for bringing o=up that issue i would have blown up the motor
thank you for the link chris

PFloyd36069 great catch I would not have even thought about that either of course a 2 stroke engine gets its oil from the mixture of gas and oil but get this I was shopping for a new or bigger actually chain say I have a bunch of 2 stroke but Stihl just came out or I just saw them whole line of 4 stroke powered saws the 4 stroke motors are very small and powerful they let me try the 390H4 I believe the part number... Warning they are almost twice the price though but if money is no object you might want to consider that option I have been building race Jet -Skis and snowmobile 2 stroke engines for over 20 years I have never heard of running one on propane becuase of the premix .. Can it be done probably but you can buy a 4 stroke Honda generator for under 700 bucks now and rip the engine out of that and if that's not enough power then get one of those Kid ATVs 4 stroke they go all the way to 200CC you could run a car with one of those if you had to

i am using a chainsaw motor for small size and linking it to a dc motor as a genorator i am trying to keep to a minimal size with maximal power. i also have to be able to get it out of my basment by myself when it is built and the only way out is up a set of stairs so i will have to make it modular and as light as posible i will have to keep modules at approimately 200 lbs each i am capable of moving 300
