Can't find my files??

I am getting started with the Propeller using the Education Kit and the Propeller IDE. I wrote some spin programs and saved them in the PE Kit sub-directory. I wanted to back them up on a USB drive.
So I went into Windows (vista) explorer, went to the sub-directory and the files are not there. I tried cmd.exe and listing all hidden files - nothing there. I was able to open the programs in the IDE and "save as" to the USB drive. I would like to just do a backup through explorer or a sync program.

Where are the files?? How do I get to them??

right click on your "start" button, select "search", navigate to "My Computer", choose the search option, "all or part of the file name", enter "*.spin" into the little text input box, then start the search.

After a time, all the .spin files on your computer will be displayed. Either your files are there, or they aren't.

If they are not there, you can go to windows explorer, under folder options (or whatever they call it in vista), find and select "show hidden files", and repeat your search.

    Good luck!

reppig. Welcome to the forum. The first thing I would try is the "Search" in Windows for the exact .spin file name. It may show up in a directory that you didn't intend to put it in. Happens to me some times.

Edit: potatohead beat me to it.

    That did not work.

According to the Propeller IDE explorer the files are there - I can open them, change them and save them.
But I can't get to them except through the Propeller IDE

If you store your stuff among the built-in files/libraries they will most likely end up in the propeller tool installation directory. Which is a really bad place to put your files under Vista. Have a look under Program Files/Parallax Inc/Propeller Tool v1.2.6

Edit: Didn't know about the invisibility (mis)feature. Urrgh! I have most of my stuff installed in a public area, so no issues there.

Run the Propeller IDE, use the file open command and navigate to where you can see the files.

Right click on one of the files and select "copy".

Open windows explorer, navigate to your Desktop, and right click and select "paste".

There are permission issues in Vista preventing you from actually seeing the files. Annoying as all get out.

Repeat the above procedure for the remaining files.

While there, or in your user directory, create a new folder. Name it something Propeller related, and cut 'n paste your files there. Next time you run the Propeller tool, navigate to that folder and continue your work there.

Note, while doing this, you never actually open the files with the Propeller tool. You are just using the open dialog as a mini-explorer to cut 'n paste the files.

An alternative is to open the files one by one, then "save as" to a folder where you've got the view permissions needed to work as you normally would.

Again, what he said. I was going to say.

    I dislike Vista.

Well, we know we had this one covered cold!

IMHO, Vista = Windows ME R2

I have know idea what that location is ,and haven't found an answer on the Web for it.

Folder permission issues make Vista useless. I have applications that have run fine on NT 4.0, 2000, and XP which break under Vista because when a program creates a new directory, it is marked as belonging to whoever is logged in at the time of the folder's creation, and if someone else logs in and runs the program the program can't get its damn data because the idiot operating system thinks the data belongs to the other user.

Based on this one issue alone I have told my corporate masters that I will not support Vista. I haven't seen a 7 system yet but if it does the same thing I won't support it either. Meanwhile I am getting a test box for seeing how well our stuff runs under Wine under Ubuntu. Even at this point I don't have a single customer who has said "we really want you to make it run under Vista." It's been more like OK, give us a few weeks to run down a XP box. And I don't really see any indication of that changing.
