More hackable than Peek - Zipit - $24.88 @ Target

OK, so I was at Target again to pick up some mouse traps. I found the Zipit device on clearance for $24.88. This has a bigger display and keypad than the Peek. It also works on a 802.11 network. From what I read, the firmware is Linux based. There are custom firmware and hardware mods already out there for this device. So far I've connected it to MSN messenger and tried out the streaming radio service. I just got this an hour ago. So, I haven't done much more research on the capabilities.

Was that the Zipit1 because there is a Zipit2 for about double the price.

Oh NO!
Please, not another hackable device that uses Linux.

Now I will have to get one and I have so many hobby projects
going that my number of lines of code at work is starting to suffer.

(I need an assistant!)

I see Britney was at Target yesterday, I bet she was getting a few
Zipit 2's so she could do some hacking...LoL smile.gif

So far the one thing I found that I don't like about the Zipit is that it uses mini SD cards. I was unable to find any mini SD cards or micro SD to mini adapters locally. So, I had to order from Walmart site to store. Anyway, once I get this, I will be able to try the MP3 player and picture viewer functions and then move onto customised software. I found quite a few sites for hacking this device. There are serial port and JTAG connections internally. There is also a expansion connector on the back that I haven't found the pinout for. However, from what I read, there is USB available on this connector.

All I could find on the Target website was the Zipit Z2A at $49.99, it isn't available yet. It looks like Amazon will be selling them for the same price so I could get one here in the UK.

This would make a neat master controller for the new stingray bot.

Nice find :)

miniSD - I found dual adapters. It is a pack which has a microSD to miniSD and a microSD to SD adapter. Cheap and solves the problem. You can use a microSD in all three, plus you can also buy a microSD to USB adapter as well.

Yes, nice find indeed. I wish I was paying attention when this was originally posted.
The connector, by the way is the same on as on the Axim X51v. I am hoping that means that the pinout is similar, at least with power. I have several Axim cables I can take apart and maybe figure it out.
We have been chatting about this at http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=878480. I'm a little late to the party, but I think the activity is starting to pick up.
