i just the other day got my xbee to respond to at commands. now i am working on getting a micro gps system set up to track rc planes that fly in our fields. i will have several nodes set up around the perimeter of the field in known spots, and i will have one on each of the planes, i will also have one on a mobile flight monitor system, the nodes i set up in the field that are just powered with a battery and no microcontroller. basically my question is, will the mobile monitoring system be able to get an rssi feed from the powered xbees in the field or do they need to be broadcasting a signal

I can't answer your question directly, since it's been a few months since I've messed with my XBees. But, I use API mode, it allows you to get pretty much any data you want from remote XBees. It's really worth the extra work required to use API mode. If you're using the Propeller chip, I can share the code I use.
