Two lexicographic queries

Query #1:· If the naming is by analogy to propellers on airplanes, why are they called cogs and not blades?· The propellers on airplanes I've flown all had hubs and blades.

Query #2:· Wouldn't it be cooler to call a more advanced Propeller a TurboProp instead of P2?

    Agreed on number 2.

On number one, the COGs are part of the machine that powers the Propeller. Does that work better?

I've always pictured the cogs as being more like the pistons of a radial engine that drive the Propeller:

If you just made that sign, what software is fast and easy enough to draw THAT to quickly illustrate an idea?
Software is so slow these days that I would have sooner finished drawing it by hand and scanning it.

I did it a couple years ago in Corel Draw for Parallax's Propeller slogan contest. It didn't win, but I still like it. smile.gif

#1: Possibly a reference to the relationship of the cogs or teeth of a gear and its hub.

Phil, that's a really neat drawing.· It ought to have won, even though there are no eight-cylinder radial engines.· Radials always have an odd number of cylinders per bank, for reasons relating to valve actuation and impulse timing.· On the other hand, I never saw an aircraft propeller with eight blades, either.· Six, yes.· Eight, no.

Duffer, undoubtedly it's a reference to cogs, or gearwheels, in a planetary gearset.· But I never saw a propelle with cogwheels in it.· Maybe the Ratier electric props of the 1940s had'em, who knows?· I've never seen one, and the only airplane I know of that used that prop was the ME-108 Taifun, a really neat machine.

I always figured "cog" was inspired by Cogito ergo sum.

    It's not? shocked.gif

No. Since there are eight of them, it's, "Cogitamus ergo sumus."

But if you're a cog, then you can be certain only that you yourself can think. The other cogs might only behave as though they think, leaving you to wonder whether they really think or not. In fact, the other cogs might be a mere illusion, in which case.... hey, haven't we been here before???

I think it came from Cogus Maximus who was an well known Roman scholar and librarian, around 300 BC. He had 8 other peers working for him until the great Papyrus shortage, which... oh, wait, I was reading that on Wikipedia. Isn't that how urban legends start? smilewinkgrin.gif Just couldn't help myself!

No, this is different. Identical octuplets are subject to quantum entanglement, a.k.a. "hive mind".

Probably so. But then would they experience themselves as a "we" or as an "I" ?

And if a male barber only shaves men who don't shave themselves, does he ever shave himself?

It's the royal "we", as in, "We are not amused."

Another query:· if a Propeller is used in an applicatiion for which it is inappropriate, is it then a MalaProp?

Else,·since malum, plural mala,·is Latin for apple, would a Apple emulator based upon a Propeller be a MalaProp?

Answer: only if your proprioception of Apples is propitiating PC propaganda. lol.gif
