The octoprop thread sponed this link

http://antipastohw.blogspot.com/2009/08/introducing-illuminato-x-machina.html

thought this would make a cool project to give away. I have started designing a 2"x2" board with a prop at the center to do this.

P0-P7, P16-P23 are taken for inter board communication. so what would you like for p8-p15 and p24-p27?

I was thinking spinstudio header on p8-p15 and p24-p27 leds on board.

Nice idea. One could have 4 serial channels per board for each side. Not all side pins would have to be used, so having all pins on DIN20s would be good. Need an EEPROM and PropPlug on pin bits P[28:31] and configurable RSTn and BOEn. Separate power connector and regulation or battery option would be useful. How would the clock work?

By the way, your Propmod1x1 board would also be good for this with optional connector stuffing ... the straight 100mil dual-row headers on the one I bought seem really big.

On the 1x1 I am soon discontinuing the headers. Many don't want. Once I get some pogo pins will be able to test still.

Yes 4 io per side. Each square can be connected in any orientation even upside down.

There will be bad for header for programing. Will make compatible with prop clip. Soldering header will be option.

diagram shows side headers they are 7 pins on each side making 14 in total.

power traces will be 12-40volts with switching regulator to 3.3v(5v pin will not work on spin studio header)

clock will not be shared unfortunately.

This flexible topology is elegant. Do you need to have any on-board identification so that the boards can know how to send information to another node? I am trying to imagine how the messaging would take place across the net without loosing this flexibility.

Why do you need so many channels between props? I would have thought that 1 TX/RX pair would suffice for each linked pair.

Cheers!

Wow..

My Propeller to Propeller Intercommunication question could not have come at a better time.

Now, if we could just get Chip to implement intercommunication expansion in the PropII, we
could create gizmo's like this and never need a PropIII. (Hmmm.. might be bad for Parallax)

Can we keep these simple and inexpensive? Prop/Crystal/connectors on each board?

1 would do but 4 wires allows faster transfer.

Would identification be needed? depends on what you want to do with it. names and locations could be automatically identified by network protocols or they could be individually named in eeprom and comunication could be done by mac address.

Almost limitless capabilities.

Assuming 80% efficiency from 12V to 5V

then
ib=0.96V/n
ib=module max current
V=input voltage(12 to 40V)
n=number of modules

these will not be that expensive.

Crystal
EEPROM
Prop
power supply
headers
leds.

quick estimates look at a cost of $30-40 each unasembled.

to lower cost even more if using less then 20 modules depending on power draw the power supply does not need to be assembled.

with no power supply and 3.3V input then
ib=6/n

Actually, when Chip asked me how much memory would be useful in PropII, my

that is acurate estimate if not populating power supply.

for power I can handle 6A max for the whole grid. with the switching power supplies that is a lot

at 40V 128 modules can draw 300mA each

without the power supply still 20 modules can be powered at 300mA each.

would anyone want a 5v power rail? parts cost is only $1.6 more efficiency on 3.3V rail though would go from 80% to 60%

need to pick one or the other:
ib=0.96V/n - is actually formula for with 5v rail
ib=1.45V/n - is formula without 5v rail
ib max is 500mA

Always an option
ib=6/n - without module power supply

so the question is:

5v and 3.3V which allows use of all spinstudio modules but has a max reasonable module limit of 384 modules(100mA each)

or

3.3V which allows many of spinstudio modules and has a max reasonable module limit of 580 modules(100mA each)

of course limit of modules is only to the number that can be run using 1 common power source. if you split up the grid into 300 module blocks and connect each blocks data lines together but not power than an infinit number of modules could be used.

here is the parts list. both files contain same data. Just in different formats.

1 of the 2 power supply options is needed.

PCB can be made in panels of 35 for $140(Electrical tested and ROHS compliant) costs an extra $20 if you were to want boards a cool black colour.

I will release gerbers tomorrow so people can get made if they like. I will get a batch made if people want and sell PCB for $10 each.

OK here are the cad files in both eagle and Gerber. You may use it in any project you like in any way you like so long as you give me credit by placing my url on the board. I ask for no royalties or fees for its use but if you do make a lot of money off it donations are appreciated via paypal(squarerootofnegativeone@gmail.com )

The board has been designed for minimal part cost and easy hand assembly. If more then 10 people would like me to make boards up I will get them made up and provide bare ROHS compliant PCBs for $10 each.

Without going to 4 layers i could not connect extra 4 pins to header. i did however make sure there was easy solder pads available for all 4 on the board.

There is a minor error on the schematic. LEDs are shown backwards. This does not effect PCB layout so it was not changed.

I will make up assembly instructions later today.
