Hi,
·Ive contacted an Aussie company who produce smart cards. They have Three offices here in OZ but no cards !!
They have their factory in China and make millions for banks and numerous companies. Not Just smart careds.

The ones I have asked them/requested·for are any or all the below which use I2C and are simple to use having no microchip :

The manager's response to my order, which was very small(my order, not his response)·seemed positive and he said something like "I'll see what I can do for you, they will have to come from China. Ill get back to you in a couple of days....."

Well its been a few days but Im not panicing yet, maybe later :)

I Am wanting to build a datalogger with the Propellor and use these cards for the data storage, I guess thats obvious. If this China order fails to come off and I dont find another supplier I just noticed an add when I logger on to the Parallax site for a SD 1 gig chip and holder for around· fourteen bucks. I will go that was if I have to, meaning if I cant get my hands on the cards above.

I have discovered that True Smart Cards which do contain a microchip are half the price and very much easier to get from 'Everywhere'.

In general, the semiconductor industry survives on orders of 10,000 or more parts as profit is based n economies of scale. Secondarily, the smart card is a security device for many of the companies that use it. So one company produces the chips and another company embeds it in a card and a third company deals with local distribution.

Together, it makes it very resistant to providing a small hobbyist or hacker with a few cards. I'd be surprised if you get any through normal channels. I suspect that taking a used Starbuck's debit card that has no value and reverse engineering it would be a faster track to getting something done. But it may not be the 8K version.

I'd just go with an EEPROM in a dip - at least at the development stage. The software would be the same.

Similar arrangements are done with other products for companies don't want copied. Branded golf clubs have their heads made in one country, their shafts in another, and final assembly to the customer's size in a third so that it is very difficult for a black market to evolve.

Each company may even be under a contract that explicitly prohibits explaining their security arrangements to anyone that is not a regular contracted customer.

Well I thinlk i will go for the SD memory chip and holder just to get things going.

I did tell the manager of ProCards or CardPro , that I wanted to get a sample of a few cards before I placed an order for thousands.

Ill write to them soon if I dont recieve a response, in the mean time Ill order acouple of the above mentioned SD solution.

    thx .

    Mike.....
