Just watched 2001 again- I still don't get it...

I think I've seen it 3 times now and read the book once and I still don't get it. Great movie, special effects, visions of the future (now past)- but I'm still lost. Anybody out there know?

Here some ideas to keep this thread relevant to the Propeller forum:
- visual speech recognition
- compress the "Zarathustra" soundtrack so we can play it from the Demoboard
- render the video scenes of traveling to infinity on the Propeller

Just finishing up the HAL 9000 emulator for the Propeller now.

Only one last bug to fix. Every time I run it I end up getting locked out of my house.

Holly, even though Bowman has been given god-like powers (which becomes apparent in the course of 2010) he chooses to take on the form of a fetus to emphasize how undeveloped he remains compared to the aliens. That, and it made a really trippy graphic to end the movie with...

You might want to read Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End. I think Clarke fancied a perspective on the human race that has us evaporating into some kind of spiritual realm at some point in our future. Watch the movie sometime and look for allusions to birth - the egg-shaped pods, the almost sperm-like entering of the spacecraft into the revolving space station, the birthday of Bowman, and so on. Although Clarke and Kubrick denied having any knowledge of Gnosticism, there are many similarities to their use of symbolic imagery and those of some ancient Gnostic myths. Even the infant at the end is supposedly similar to a vision by one of the leaders of an ancient Gnostic school. Valentine? In any case, it wouldn't be the first time a writer has unknowingly re-invented/regurgitated an obscure myth from the ancient past.

Fun topic, a great movie, but our discussion of it probably should go in the sandbox.

That's a known bug that's not repairable unless you install explosive hinges on your house door.

The movie makes little sense unless you read the book. Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: a Space Odyssey. It makes little enough sense even if you HAVE read the book.

In an interview years ago, Arthur C Clarke said that Kubrick and himself came to a disagreement over the ending scenes of the film and he basically stood down and allowed Kubrick to add his artistic and eccentric ideas to the finished product, Arthur confessed that he didnt understand the ending himself.
