Using a 3.5mm 4-pole connector for audio and composite video on prop pcbs

The 3.5mm socket takes less space on the pcb and can provide stereo out (or in) plus video (TV) out on the one connector. A cable is required to convert to RCA connectors.

Unfortunately there is a number of incompatible standards. Attached is the diagram of some different connections.

I am not sure of whether to use the iPod or Nokia/iBook version. The video and ground are swapped which makes them totally incompatible. I looked on eBay·and they can be bought for from about·$5+ including shipping. It is also possible that some people already have one of these versions.
Below are some eBay links... (I have not tried any of these)

Digikey part numbers for the 4-pole 3.5mm sockets...
CP-43514-ND (t/hole), CP-43514SJCT-ND (smt but should be able to be hand soldered)

Do you think this style of connector is a good idea?
If so, what standard do you think we should use (or provide links to swap video and ground)?

Faced with a similar dilemma on a board to be released soon, I opted for a stereo 3.5mm socket. While it's not possible to do simultaneous stereo audio and video with it, I've been able to accommodate just about every other combination. The advantage of a stereo socket is commonness: you can get adapters for it at Radio Shack. The same can't be said for the three-channel types, and I'd be a little shy about using one, unless you also plan to provide the adapter cables as well.

Phil: The video iPods use the three channel types, as do some of the camera/video phones such as a numer of the Nokia phones. It is just that they have a differing pinout. I found that I have a cable here from my wife's Nokia. I am sure I also have a camcorder one here (another pinout again) also. However, with the iPod video's now becoming prevalent, the cables are available, just not cheaply except for eBay.

I haven't had time to see if I can make the pcb take either connector by overlaying both the RCA and 3.5mm socket.

I have managed to overlay the USB-A, PS2 connector and 4-pin header. Just have to use a couple of jumpers to get to the right pinouts.

The pinout comparision is a little bewildering as it indicates the iPod Video has Tip as Right instead of Left (which is the norm for stereo headphones). In fact, the Zen set up of keeping Sleeve as Ground makes the most sense to me. But going with the iPod / camcorder "standard" for ground will probably make it a lot easier to find cables. I think I have one which came with a portable DVD player, I'll have to check it out to see what order it uses.

Yes, I must agree, the Nokia/Zen/iBook makes the most sense. However, the iPod and Camcorders can be interchanged by swapping the RCA colors. Left and Right can be sorted easily enough.

My feeling is to have links on the pcb to swap the 2 end "rings" so that the ground can be swapped. Of course, this means we use 2 standards, but then anyone with a cable is fine. I have a pair of Nokia's (they come with the N85 & N95) and I am sure I have at least 1 Camcorder cable somewhere. And these cables are available fairly cheap on eBay and more expensively in the shops (camera, phone and iPod) if you are desperate.

There is even an eBay version with RCA sockets, but I don't know which pinout.

For me, this is a space saving exercise, as fitting into a box means only 1 or 2 ends of connectors.

    USB-A -v- PS2:
Recently, Peter said he uses USB connectors instead of PS2 for keyboard and mouse connections. He still uses the clock/data PS2 protocol, but can use newer keyboard and mouse with the USB connectors (not all keyboard and mouse support the older protocol). They take less space and he can buy 2 stacked USB-A connectors in the space of 1 PS2 connector. With a little juggling I have found I can overlay the footprints to get 1 or 2(stacked) USB-A or 1 PS2 connector in a comon set of holes. Even 0.1" pin headers fit into these. FYI the Digikey parts are: 609-1045-ND, 609-1040-ND, CP-2460-ND, CP-2260-ND, CP-4060-ND.

    Power connector:
    Digikey CP102A-ND, CP-202-A-ND (-A versions are 2.1mm center pin, -B are 2.5mm)

    RCA connector (yellow):
Digikey CP-1403-ND, (there is a narrower version but I cannot find the p/n at the moment)

    VGA connector:
    Digikey 609-2802-ND, 151-1117-ND (shallower footprint)

    microSD:
Digikey HR1941CT-ND (smt but can be hand soldered - exposed pins)

    mini USB-B:
