Barcode Scanner - anyone know of an engine I can purchase

I intend to add a barcode scanner to a project I am working on. It needs to be laser. I searched Digikey and Mouser, and could not find a single component. I just spent a lot of time on google. I also searched the stamp forums here, but it looks like no-one has done this with a stamp?

I did find one from Honeywell, but it contains the scanner and the decoder board for $89. My hope was to find just the scanner part, and do my own decoder with the propeller, of course.

My hope is that someone else on this board knows of a small laser barcode scanner physical engine I could use in my project. Thanks in advance for the help.

It's not a laser scanner, but the Cue-Cat barcode scanner will work with a slight modification to the keyboard object on the Propeller (I have one and tested this).

For a time, Radio shack was giving away The Cue-Cats with every purchase. It looks like the original company is no more, but you can still find a few readers on E-bay here and there.

I'm not sure you'll find just the laser module, and given the commodity nature of bc scanners these days I almost think an assembled unit will be near as cheap as the components.· But really they are just vibrating mirrors or line scanners with a photodiode to capture the reflection.

You might consider eBay for a used one.· If you get a PS2 interface it will plug right in.

I've got my share of CueCats too ;-)

I have 2 Symbol LS-1220 Serial Laser Scan Engines and they work quite nicely. I have a project in the backseat that will utilize them. Check eBay for "LS-1220", they are inexpensive, small, and very durable. Power is supplied on two unused pins on the DB-9 on the back. I can dig up the datasheets if you have trouble finding them.

This guy has a few of them for $20
