PE-styled Mini propeller kit

I've been working on this project on and off the last couple weeks.
With Bean's 5-cell battery holder, I finally had enough pieces to assemble it.

There are too many times when I only have 15 mins to play with the Propeller,
(Not enough time to escape to the basement lab and setup)

This is my "Go Anywhere" kit.

Includes:

1 Intec Gameboy case (bought at 70% off at a local discount store)
1 Demoboard (Added a single wire from the center post of the video connector)
1 Spy Gear Headset (composite video) Will replace with video glasses soon
1 uController SD card
1 5 Cell Battery Pack (thanks Terry!)
1 Parallax Joystick
Various parts

Got a few more pieces to add, but I like it!

OBC

Very cute cool! I like the case.

Where are you going to find video glasses?

    OBC,

How would you like to try to get that through airport security?

    Great idea!

    > Spygear

OBC, is that the thing on the right, inside the back corner of the case? Is the curved folding thing sticking out of the middle part of the head strap?

When you wear that, should we rename you to Old Bit Cyborg? :)) :))

Cool set up ... I too have my 'road kit' inside a couple of cases like that.

A guy at work was complaining that his wife resented it
when he went to the garage to work on stuff at his workbench.
He said "If she was like you then we would both go to the garage
to work on projects for hours every evening"

It made me feel kind of special and strange at the same time smile.gif

OBC, that is one nifty looking piece of kit! I was going to ask where the display is, but then I reread it and note you have spygear composite video. I don't quite know what that is but, wow, it sounds futuristic. Almost cyborg. I'm pretty sure I want one of these kits...

but, can I justify it to the missus? Hmm, can I justify any of my electronics purchases to the missus?

Re Holly, I jokingly sometimes tell gentlemen that when they retire, they should get a shed, and they should have breakfast and then go out to the shed at 8am and not come back till 6pm at night. It is the only way to ensure marital harmony and bliss. Otherwise, arguments develop over things like how long a cake should be cooked for. Not that my wife ever burnt a cake. Nor that I ever mentioned it. Well, ok maybe just once. I've still got 3 limbs left...

I can't wait to retire and get 10 hours of shed time per day. Then I could build one of OBCs kits!

    @Dr_Acula

This will probably sound funny to many guys on here
since it is such a reversal of what they may have gone
    through...

I once had an argument with my BF because I was working
on a project at my little work table in the bedroom while
he felt all neglected and had to fix dinner himself and clean
    up the mess... LoL

Oh, I like your avatar image, you look quite nice.

But somehow whenever I see it I half expect you to start
talking about tonight's weather or the local sports scores...LoL
You look like a TV newsguy getting ready for the little red
    'LIVE' light to come on.

    Nice kit OBC!!

I've been doing the "Propeller on the road" and "quickie setup Propeller on spare table" bit for a while now. So...

    Potatohead Propeller Geek Travel Tips.

I carry on the delicate goodies. In my laptop bag, I have:

    (1) Propeller board of some kind, or another.
    (1) Video capture card for use with Laptop on the go.
    (some) connecting wire
    (1) Prop Plug
    (2) SD cards, so one can be running, while the other one is being loaded with next code version, if needed.
    (1) Set of headphones
    (1) USB video capture device
(misc) bits 'n pieces for whatever project circuit I'm trying to think through, bagged and tagged.

I'll typically leave it all in the laptop bag, and in one pouch, so that if they want to look it over, it's all really easy.

In my checked bag goes all the heavy stuff. AC, battery, soldering iron, solder, etc... These all go in one bag. I toss the user input bits in there too. Joystick, thumb pad, keyboard and such.

I label things in the checked luggage.

The only problems I had was early on, having a disorganized mess. They saw it, and just had to check it out and ask questions. When that happened, it was kind of odd. A few friendly conversations later, keeping it neat, labeled and organized was the key to them not having any worries.

The video capture is a god-send really. It's quick to fire up the computer, connect the USB goodies, download something and view result on capture device. I can snap frames to disk, make little movies and very quickly write, run, observe, repeat. The only downside is some latency. Unless you are actually gaming, or interacting, this is no big deal. If it is, I would totally go with the OBC quick and dirty video route.

My work takes me places, and I've got evenings that are a whole lot more fun this way, compared to just surfing the net and watching the tube!

At home, I've found I can put stuff in a small box, have it all connected and ready. I use an ordinary extension cord with the wall warts just plugged in and ready, and USB devices and user input devices connected. Open laptop, connect stuff, go!

Working with actual circuits just doesn't go well for me, unless I've got an hour, so I have that stuff setup in another box I use when I know I've got time.

For Holly (two posts above), here is tonight's weather for the Propeller forum. Most threads will continue to experience fine and sunny conditions. However, smoke from the flame wars on a couple of threads will drift over the settled areas tomorrow, and will combine with high altitude haze from smoke let out of incorrectly wired up propeller chips. These conditions will clear once rain from a series of recent stormy threads extinguishes the fires. Some breezy and longwinded exchanges can be expected in the next few days. Temperatures are expected to rise after some heated discussions, followed by a return to more normal conditions once cooler heads prevail. And now, back to you Holly for the latest on sport.

@Holly -->That's a total reversal! Too funny. And true, for me at least!

You and I think alike on Dr_Acula's avatar! I hear either a smooth, polished delivery like the post above, or "HI! Dr A here with the Parallax Propeller..." Think a cross between that Mays pitch guy that recently died, and Max Headroom, for kind of a bizzare, "Blade Runner" bizzaro world, spokesman.

Dr_Acula: Magic 8 ball says: "Outlook good".

Dr_Acula's avatar might make you think of a TV news guy with a smooth polished delivery but the name makes me think of a crucifix, garlic, wooden stakes, etc. I bet his friends call him Vlad.
A little off topic I know but the villagers must be warned!

I have a "demoboard" in an old Sony Beta tape case, for lunchtimes (and extentions, fore and aft). The disguise worked for about a month but now the boss has moved into the same room (and it's not a man). I'll have to move· benches, around the corner.

Perhaps I have found a use for that third prop on the triblade, an eight·cored boss spotter.

Te he Brad_H. You are closer to the truth than you know. The first 3-4 patients I see each morning are for fasting blood tests. Usually that elicits at least one comment about vampires (or leeches). Then I see 10 people with colds, and I might tell them that antibiotics don't do anything for colds, but to eat more garlic (it is supposed to boost the immune system but I think it actually works by keeping everyone away from you so you don't get a cold in the first place). Then I go and do some night shift work...

Anyway, back OT, OBC, can you tell us more about the headset? Cost, where to get them etc. It sounds nifty.

It just gets funner and funnier with each passing thread.

Yes, well as I wrote that weather report I did have a couple of particular threads in mind *grin*. As for the photo, I did try taking my picture in a mirror but for some reason it didn't come out. Maybe I'll try OBC's video system...
