Check out this color serial camera:
uCAM-TTL: www.4dsystems.com.au/prod.php?id=75
I just placed an order with Saelig for the $58 camera:
www.saelig.com/product/BOVI002.htm
It occupies a little more than a square inch and operates on 3.3v.
It supports a 115kbaud-max serial link so frame rate is severely limited, however,
its flexibility in switching between JPEG to RAW formats, coupled with resolution
ranges from 80x60 to 640x480 and bit resolutions as low as 2-bits gray scale,
suggests as few as 2/8 x 80 x 60 = 1200 bytes per second per frame. That's
about 12 frames per second using raw 80x60 2-bit gray.
It could be used as a low-resolution, 10+ fps motion sensor in a robotics application,
then when it is determined that something of interest is occurring, the robot could switch
to high-quality 640x480 JPEG mode and stream its data through to a 2GB microSD
card.
If someone has not already beaten me to the punch, I hope to write a cog-based
object for the camera in the next few months.
What do you guys think ? Is there a better solution out there already ?
