Unofficial Propeller Expo 2010: Chicago. Tentative date May 15th 2010

It's a week away from UPENE, but I'm seriously considering a Chicago expo in 2010.
I'm going to make a trip over to a potential location in September and would appreciate
comments on this...

The Norwalk expo is here to stay, but I'm seriously considering moving the 2nd one around the country.

Sounds good! Don't know if I could make it, but almost everyone in my family wanted to know how far Chicago was from Norwalk!

Sounds great to me, but could you make it farther apart from UPENE (assuming that that will be same time next year) - one month is a bit close together - I would need some time to regroup and restock. Perhaps October or November would be good.

My parents live in Chicago, and I would probably go if it is a bit more past the UPENE time frame. We would come in on that Friday and stay over-night at my parents and/or some of my other family there. My wife and any kids who wanted to go would spend Saturday visiting Grandma & Grandpa, etc, while I would go to the expo, then home on Sunday. Could even write it off on taxes.

Also, whichever you decide, I will let some Chicagoans know about - there are a lot of electronics/robotics hobbyists there.

Yahoo Maps reports just under 300 miles. We live in Pittsburgh and it is right about 500 miles for us to make the Chicago run.

Chicago isnt very north east.. ya know? lol how bout host the nor easter at MIT?! or DC? Although DC is perfect for the entire east coast with plenty of airports and being centrally located midway up the coast. Chicago is more midwest-ish.. perhaps it be a reality that ill have my private pilots licence by then and may be able to borrow the ol' mans Cardinal.

You know, at the risk of sounding like I'm trying to pimp the hometown, New Orleans has some fine convention facilities, hotels, eateries, stuff to do, and is about as centrally located as Chicago. Just sayin'.

Hold on... Don't get rid of the Norwalk Expo. That is about the edge of my travel abilities for now (except for Chicago, but that is only because I've got kinfolk there.) If UPENE had been any further than Norwalk, I would not have even been able to consider it and then would not have gotten into the Propeller.

More UPE's would be great, but let's not try to kill OBC by asking him to be setting up dozens or hundreds of expos every year.

OBC - What do you think about others setting up Unofficial Propeller Expos in other locations? Parallax, any input from you guys? Maybe we could have one in Pittsburgh (or maybe not, that might be too close to the Norwalk one - don't want to burn out people.)

Don't fear.. The I doubt that we will move the Norwalk Expo. :)

It's only an hour from me, and the rate we get on the location itself is very reasonable.

The purpose of this thread is to put out feelers for where to put Expo #2.
(We might even move it around a little.)

An idea location will provide access to Propeller heads from three to four surrounding states.

    Keep the ideas churning gang!

Chicago would be cool, except it seems like it might be a little close to OH (only 4 or so hours), so you'd probably get a lot of the same attendees, and exclude the same group (people who don't want to fly to the show, but too far to drive). Even though DC would be awesome (for me, living about 20mi west), I don't know that it'd be a great location, since OH is close enough for me to drive to as well. Some place with other stuff to do would probably be ideal, so it could turn into a family trip, but I don't really have a location in mind.

If the Frappr map worked, you could pick a location central for a large cluster of Propeller users, but further west seems like it'd be ideal.

If it were up to me, I would avoid big cites like Chicago or DC and aim for places like Norwalk. Another thing to look at would be colleges and universities. Earlier this summer I attended a function at Keuka College in Keuka Park, NY. I had a dorm room with bathroom down the hall for $ 35 a night. We had the use of several classrooms, a lot of outdoor space and the school's waterfront (it was a canoeing group). Since all we need are a big room, lodging and food, we should have more choices available to us. Just a thought

I live in SE Wisconsin. Chicago is definitely in for me, what would you need for help? Can't make Norwalk, Dodge County fair, school bus races, local fireman picnic with fireworks, a horse auction and some other thing. Probably need 3 visits to the ATM to make it thru. Oh and fishing...

I'll throw my own 2 cents in

    Binghamton NY - It's right on 3 major interstates I-81, I-86 and I-88

I-81 is a major north-south Interstate, goes from the Canadian border down to around Tennessee

I-88 just connects Binghamton to Albany, NY - It'd be the route that most would take from New England States

I-86 goes from Erie, PA all the way to NYC

It's just 3 hours from New York city

only 5 miles from uController.com Headquarters!

A major university so there are many hotels and motels around.

Any firm dates for the west coast EXPO next year. I can't seem to find the thread that spoke about it, but the wife wants to go and I have a deal to get some air fair tickets at a discount. But may need to book the flight soon.

    OBC,

I live outside Chicago would certainly attend if I am in town.· If you need help figuring out a location or such I can try to help out.· As I suspect, you are probably thinking somwhere in the burbs and not Chicago proper.· Let me know if I can help and I will certainly do what I can!

    Jeff,

I strongly encourage a Chicago location for UPE. We have a number of customers in the area and there are tons of venues where it could be hosted.

You have our total support for assisting in any way you need: rental expenses, food, or whatever. Count us in as much or as little as you desire.

The message is loud and clear gang..

Ok, I'll start getting serious about Chicago..

Ken, I've had a lot of requests to NOT move UPENE from Norwalk, so this might mean three expos this year.
I'll let you guys know what happens as we move forward. UPEC sounds like a good idea to me too.
