I guess you missed the sale a week or two ago. Ken got a little concerned when Lauren put· it up so cheap.

Hope she still has her job! tongue.gif

I know there is some value in having all those components mounted on a DIP40, and certainly Parallax deserves some support, but I must be missing something here...

    44 QFN Prop IC = $7.99
    FTDI F232RL = $3.95
    32K EEPROM = $1.50
    5Mhz Crystal = $1.10
    Related small hardware = ~$10.00
    =========================

TOTAL: ~$25 (at Parallax retail prices)

    Agent420: You forgot to include:

    PCB: ~$7
    Assembly Costs: ~$12
That brings the total to $44

    Parallax isn't a non-profit with volunteers, so:
    Desired profit: $20 (total guess)
    Built-in Design/Support/Overhead recovery: ~$10 (total guess)

That makes $74. Since the normal price is $79.99 those numbers are probably a decent guess. If you take away the profit, that makes the guess $54 which would make the daily deal an excellent sale price.
You could actually create a BOM and price the components out exactly and have a fab house give you a ballpark quote on a similar design to see what your full BOM cost would be. Then you have to add in costs to bring all the parts in and assembly, test, packaging, etc. It will add up very quickly. A few of my ideas have stopped when I got to that point because my raw cost would be around the price of current products on the market.

Well, I won't disagree that there is some overhead involved, but I hard time believing·they're paying $7 for a pcb the size of a DIP40 and $12 each to assemble in the quantities sold.·

Don't get me completely wrong - I'm glad a company like Parallax is around, especially in the US, and I too am willing to pay a small premium for that.· It's just a bit odd when the individual items for a product are listed on the same page and total less than half the cost.· I was primarily wondering if I was missing something because of that.
